Beth Hill, our women’s ambassador, GB player and Guildford Lightning athlete, recently asked Nick to run a session with her club team before their playoff finals weekend.
Beth had already worked with Nick one to one and had signposted GB teammates towards ReTribe when they were feeling a little stuck, so this was another step in building trust through the work.
Here is what Beth had to say:
“With a young, strong Guildford Lightning team heading into playoffs, I felt it would be really valuable for the girls to have a session with Nick Rothwell.
We already had a great mindset within the group, but I wanted us to take a moment together, connect properly, and work through a few things as a team before a big weekend.
I reached out to Nick hoping he might have a free moment, and he could not have been more excited to support us. He kindly and selflessly made himself available for a Zoom call with the team.
Nick touched on so many important parts of the game, but most of all, he reminded us that hockey is there to be enjoyed. That really landed with us.
We finished the league ranked third, which was already a big achievement. Going into playoffs, the team raised their game again. We took the first game into overtime and won in a shootout against a team ranked above us. In the final, we lost by just one goal in the last three minutes against the league winners.
There were moments we had to deal with things outside of our control, which is tough, but what stood out was the team’s never give up attitude.
The mindfulness and visualisation work with Nick was brilliant for us as a team. I would highly recommend him to players and teams. Ice hockey is tough physically, but it is also tough mentally. Nick helped remind us that we do this for joy, and that is where we grow as individuals and as a team.
Having fun together is the best feeling.”
