How to Care for a Child with Flu at Home 🏡
Flu can make children feel miserable, but with the right care at home, most recover well.
💧 1. Fluids are key
Offer water, soups, and oral rehydration fluids to prevent dehydration.
😴 2. Encourage rest
Your child’s body needs energy to fight the infection.
🌡️ 3. Manage fever and pain
Use paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed for fever and discomfort.
🌬️ 4. Relieve congestion
Saline drops or spray can help clear the nose, especially in younger children.
🌡️ 5. Keep the environment comfortable
Not too hot, not too cold — a calm, well-ventilated space helps recovery.
👀 6. Monitor closely
Watch for warning signs like difficulty breathing, persistent high fever, or dehydration.
Most importantly — trust your instincts as a parent. If something doesn’t feel right, seek medical care.
At Advent Pediatric Center, we are here to support you every step of the way 💙

When did the flu become an emergency in children?
Most children recover from the flu through rest, hydration, and supportive care. However, parents should be aware of the early warning signs that urgent medical assistance is needed.
🚨 If your child experiences any of the following conditions, seek emergency care:
• Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
• Blue lips or face
• Severe chest pain
• Confusion, extreme sleepiness, or difficulty waking up
• Prolonged high fever (especially ≥40°C / 104°F)
• Signs of dehydration (no tears, dry mouth, no urination)
Infants and young children may experience rapid deterioration during viral infections, so please trust your intuition as parents. If your child appears to be in much more serious condition than expected, seek medical assistance.
At the Christmas Pediatric Center, we are here to help your child stay healthy and safe during flu season.

Flu usually: • Starts suddenly
• Causes high fever
• Leads to body aches and fatigue

Common cold usually: • Starts gradually
• Causes mild symptoms

• Rarely causes high fever
When should parents seek medical care?
If your child has: • Difficulty breathing
• A high fever that won’t go away
• Extreme sleepiness or lethargy
• Poor feeding or dehydration
