Equine asthma is a breathing problem caused by inflammation in the airways. It can range from mild to severe, but across all forms, one thing matters most: reducing dust and irritants in the horse's environment.

What many owners think of as "dust" is more than just visible dirt. It can include bacteria, mold and fungal spores, mites, endotoxins, and other tiny particles that trigger inflammation in the lungs. Some of the worst particles are actually too small to see.

The key is the horse's breathing zone - the air right around the nose. Dust in that area matters much more than dust elsewhere in the barn. Even a stable that looks clean can still have harmful tiny particles in the air.

Common dust and irritant sources can include:
• Hay
• Bedding
• Sweeping or mucking stalls
• Barn blowers
• Round bale feeding
• Very dry, windy conditions
• Pollens or other allergens
• Unusual triggers like nearby manure piles, chemical sprays, chickens, or certain bedding materials

Management often focuses on lowering dust exposure:
• Reconsidering hay and bedding
• Using wood shavings
• Feeding a pelleted diet or hay cubes
• Soaking hay
• Steaming hay correctly
• Considering haylage
• Avoiding round bale feeding in horses prone to severe asthma

Note that medication may help control inflammation or open the airways, but there is no replacement to environmental management. Long-term improvement depends on reducing dust in the horse's environment, especially in the breathing zone.

WHAT IS LEPTOSPIROSIS? 🔎

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection horses can pick up from contaminated urine, reproductive fluids, or contaminated water/soil. Risk is higher with stagnant water, flooding/heavy rain, and exposure to wildlife/rodents.

Leptospirosis is most known for affecting the kidneys, pregnancy, and eyes. The main syndromes associated with it are:

• Kidney disease (acute renal failure): may include fever, not eating, changes in urine production, and abnormal kidney bloodwork; urine testing may show blood/inflammation.

• Pregnancy loss / foal illness: can cause placentitis, abortion (often late-term, typically after 8 months), or a sick newborn foal (weakness, jaundice).

• Equine recurrent uveitis (ERU): a painful, recurring eye inflammation that can happen months to years after the original infection and can threaten vision.

🩺 Symptoms of Leptospirosis can include:
• Fever, dullness, not eating
• Changes in urination or signs of illness consistent with kidney trouble
• Abortion, especially late in pregnancy (sometimes with no warning signs)
• Eye pain/squinting/recurring eye inflammation

Prevention:
An equine-approved vaccine is available. Talk to your veterinarian to discuss your horse's suitability and the appropriate vaccination protocol for your specific situation.

⚠️Human safety note:
Some types of Leptospira serovars can infect people. Use care while handling urine or aborted tissues/fluids and involve your veterinarian promptly.

If you have questions or concerns about Leptospirosis in regard to your equines, contact your veterinarian.

LET'S TALK KISSING SPINE! 🔎

“Kissing spine” is a common cause of back pain where the bony points along the top of the spine (dorsal spinous processes) sit too close together and rub or “impinge.” It’s most often seen in the mid-back area (around T13–T18), but it can also involve the lumbar spine.

Important note:
Many horses can have kissing spine changes on X-rays and not show obvious problems, but horses with kissing spine findings are about 3x more likely to have back pain.

Common signs owners may notice:
• Vague “poor performance” or not wanting to work as usual
• Change in head/neck carriage
• Unwillingness to move a certain direction or bend
• Behavioral changes under saddle such as bucking
• Back soreness when pressed firmly
• Sometimes hind-end lameness at the same time

Treatment & outlook:
• Many cases can be managed medically, especially when paired with core strengthening and conditioning.
• Some horses benefit from injections at affected sites for short-term relief, but recurrence can be common.
• Surgery can be an option (especially if a horse needs repeated injections to stay comfortable). One surgery type (interspinous ligament desmotomy) can be done standing, and published outcomes have been strong.

If your horse suddenly resists work, won’t bend, changes topline use, or seems back-sore, talk with your veterinarian. Back pain can have multiple causes, and X-rays are only one piece of the puzzle.
