American Discovery Trail – Partial Day 6

I joined my hiking buddies at the start of today’s hike from Berkeley to Walnut Creek. The ADT follows the Strawberry Canyon Fire Trail, a route I hike on my lunch break almost every day! Alas, I had to get to work, so I wished them Buen Camino and headed back down the hill.

I really enjoyed walking parts of the first few stages of the , reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones with fun trail names like Trail Ju**ie, Spidey, and White Beard.

I’m grateful to the volunteers, trail stewards, and enthusiasts who guided us along the way. I hope many more people will carry the batons forward and discover more of our beautiful country—and the wonderful people they meet along the trail.

Yes, the American Discovery Trail goes right through Oakland, up College Ave to Berkeley. When it’s this close to home, how can I not participate! We started in Emeryville’s shoreline park where a few of the Hikeanation veterans and Dave Whitson arrived after their trek across the bay. First with a rowing team to get to Treasure Island, then the eastern span of the Bay Bridge, the batons made it safely across the bay for a new chapter in this journey across the USA.

Day 2 of the American Discovery Trail 250 Relay takes us from Point Reyes Five Brooks trailhead to Muir Woods. Beautiful redwoods, ferns, wildflowers, waterfalls, sea views and camino camaraderie.

Grateful to participate in the first day of the from Limantour Beach. We are carrying batons with copies of the Declaration of Independence in honor of the 250 anniversary of the signing. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness batons will be passed from hand to hand across the country to the end point in Delaware on Thanksgiving Day.

So excited to start the ADT 250 relay on Wednesday, July 1! Those who attended Dave Whitson & Sandy Brown’s presentation for our chapter a few months ago may recall that Dave said it goes right up College Ave from Oakland to the UC Berkeley campus. My ears perked up and I thought I’d sign up for that one day - Sunday, July 5. Well, my FOMO got the best of me and I signed up for the first 5 stages.
There is still space on many of the segments including the Emeryville to Berkeley stage on July 5. Who else signed up, and for which stages?

Hello! I am excited to share that I will be a participant in this year's American Discovery 250 Relay starting in July and running until Thanksgiving. The route is along the entire 6,800 mile American Discovery Trail. I will be carrying a special baton with a replica of the Declaration of Independence inside, and joining hundreds of other participants in what promises to be the longest non-motorized relay in world history. The relay is non-competitive, non-political and free.
