The moment discomfort shows up, most people have the same reaction: muscles harden, breath shortens, the whole body tightens around the sensation, an automatic, unconscious defense almost nobody would name as a choice.
Except it isn’t protecting anything. That hardening is what actually holds pain in place, the bracing becomes its own source of tension, layered on top of whatever was there to begin with.
Noticing the bracing is the real turning point. Once it’s seen, it’s something you can start to let go of on purpose, instead of holding it by accident.
