Rai Pinto has a full education in industrial and interior design and he worked in the design sector over the last 10 years. We work in design consulting, interior design, interior architecture projects in residential, commercial, retail, stands, institutional and healthcare areas. To manage different kind of projects we have a small structure and we create specific teams with usual collaborators such as architects, graphic designers, fabricators and landscape architects.

A veces, los proyectos llegan al estudio a través de amistades, y esa conexión personal hace que tengan un significado especial para nosotros.

Hace un tiempo tuvimos la oportunidad de diseñar la Pastisseria Ricart situada en la plaza Major de Llançà, en el Alt Empordà. Detrás del proyecto están Xavi y Mercè. A Xavi y a mí nos une una amistad desde la infancia y muchos veranos compartidos en Llançà, algo que dio un significado especialmente personal a este proyecto.

Pero lo que hace interesante a la Pastisseria Ricart es su historia. Después de casi veinte años formándose en diferentes pastelerías y restaurantes, Xavi decidió iniciar su propio proyecto como pastelero. Abrió el establecimiento exactamente en el mismo lugar donde su abuelo había tenido durante muchos años la pastelería del pueblo, un espacio que todavía forma parte de la memoria colectiva de mucha gente de Llançà.

Hay, por tanto, un fuerte sentido de continuidad, de historia familiar y de conexión con el lugar. Y, por encima de todo, está el producto. Elaboran una pastelería excepcional y, en este caso, teníamos muy claro que el diseño nunca debía competir con aquello que producen. El producto debía ser el protagonista.

Por este motivo, la intervención en el espacio es deliberadamente discreta y sencilla. La tienda y el obrador se tratan como un único espacio en cuanto a materialidad, concebido como una caja de microcemento de tonalidad arenosa. Las dos áreas están separadas por una lámina-cerramiento de vidrio con montantes de madera. Es un espacio muy pequeño en el que tienen que suceder muchas cosas: el espacio tienda tiene tan solo 14m². Pero esta naturaleza compacta también se convirtió en uno de sus puntos fuertes: la tienda y el obrador comparten un mismo espacio, permitiendo a los clientes vivir muy de cerca el proceso de elaboración de los productos. Prácticamente no hay separación entre las personas que los elaboran y quienes vienen a disfrutarlos.

Como persona que le gustan los dulces, solo puedo recomendar hacer el desvío hasta Llançà. Entre las muchas virtudes del pueblo, la Pastisseria Ricart es, sin duda, una de ellas.

De vegades els projectes arriben a l’estudi a través d’amistats, i aquesta connexió personal fa que tinguin un significat especial per a nosaltres.

Fa un temps vam tenir l’oportunitat de dissenyar la Pastisseria Ricart situada a la plaça Major de Llançà, a l’Alt Empordà. Darrere del projecte hi ha el Xavi i la Mercè. Amb el Xavi ens uneix una amistat d’infància i molts estius compartits a Llançà, fet que va donar un significat especialment personal a aquest projecte.

Però el que fa interessant la Pastisseria Ricart és la seva història. Després de gairebé vint anys formant-se en diferents pastisseries i restaurants, el Xavi va decidir iniciar el seu propi projecte com a pastisser. Va obrir l’establiment exactament al mateix lloc on el seu avi havia tingut durant molts anys la pastisseria del poble, un espai que encara forma part de la memòria col·lectiva de molta gent de Llançà.

Hi ha, per tant, un fort sentit de continuïtat, d’història familiar i de connexió amb el lloc. I, per damunt de tot, hi ha el producte. Elaboren una pastisseria excepcional i, en aquest cas, teníem molt clar que el disseny no havia de competir mai amb allò que produeixen. El producte havia de ser el protagonista.

Per aquest motiu, la intervenció en l’espai és deliberadament discreta i senzilla. La botiga i l’obrador es tracten com un únic espai pel que fa a la materialitat, concebut com una caixa de microciment de tonalitat sorrenca. Les dues àrees estan separades per una làmina-tancament de vidre amb muntants de fusta. És un espai molt petit on han de passar moltes coses, i el projecte es va desenvolupar amb recursos i temps limitats: l’espai de botiga té tan sols 14m². Però aquesta aquesta naturalesa compacte es va convertir en un dels seus punts forts: la botiga i l’obrador comparteixen el mateix espai, permetent als clients viure de molt a prop el procés d’elaboració dels productes. Gairebé no hi ha separació entre les persones que els elaboren i les que venen a gaudir-ne.

Com a persona llaminera, només puc recomanar fer el desviament fins Llançà. Entre les moltes virtuts del poble, la Pastisseria Ricart n’és sens dubte una.

Sometimes, projects come to the studio through friendships, and that personal connection gives them a special meaning for us.

Some time ago, we had the opportunity to design Pastisseria Ricart ,a pastry shop located in the main square of Llançà, a town in the Alt Empordà region. Behind the project are Xavi and Mercè. Xavi and I have been friends since childhood, connected by many summers spent in Llançà, which made working on this project particularly meaningful.

But what makes Pastisseria Ricart special is its story. After nearly twenty years of training and working in different pastry shops and restaurants, Xavi decided to start his own project as a pastry chef. He opened his shop in exactly the same place where his grandfather had run the village pastry shop for many years, a place that is still part of the collective memory of many people in Llançà.

There is therefore a strong sense of continuity, family history, and connection to the place. And above all, there is the product. They make exceptional pastries, and in this case, we were very conscious that the design should never compete with what they produce. The product had to come first.

For that reason, the spatial intervention is deliberately quiet and simple. The shop and bakery are treated as a single space in terms of materiality, conceived as a sand-toned microcement box. The two areas are separated by an element glass-partition with timber frames. It is a very small space where many things need to happen, and the project was developed with limited time and resources, the retail space itself is just 14m2. But its compactness also became one of its strengths: the shop and the bakery share the same space, allowing customers to experience the making of the pastries at very close range. There is almost no separation between the people who make the products and those who come to enjoy them.

And as someone with a serious sweet tooth, I can only recommend making the detour to Llançà. Among the town’s many qualities, Pastisseria Ricart is certainly certainly one of them.

At Rai Pinto Studio, we believe that social design and architecture place people’s wellbeing and needs at the center of the design process, with the aim of creating a positive impact on society.

This belief served as the foundation for our conversation in the Architecture and Social Design series, part of Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026, where we explored the role of social design in healthcare environments.

During the session, , founder of the studio, shared our approach to human-centred design, exploring how architecture and design shape everyday experiences, foster emotional wellbeing, and create positive social impact through collaborative and community-driven processes.

Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation and contributed to such an inspiring exchange of ideas.

It was a pleasure to attend SNF Nostos 2026 in Athens.

As part of the multidisciplinary team working on three new hospitals currently under construction in Greece, we had the opportunity to visit the sites and witness the progress of these landmark projects, led by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation in collaboration with Renzo Piano Building Workshop

This year’s edition of SNF Nostos, under the theme “Humanity at the Core,” takes on special significance as SNF celebrates the 30th anniversary of its founding. The theme highlights the importance of placing people at the center of every initiative, a message that strongly resonates with these hospitals, which represent far more than new healthcare facilities. They are an investment in the present and future of Greek society.

Vacational apartments in Mas Estela, an old winery in Empordà region, Catalonia

Mas is the name used to call Mediterranean farmhouses in the region of Catalonia. Mas Estela is an old farmhouse located inside Cap de Creus Natural Park in the Empordà region; there are documents referencing this property since the 10th century. These days, the property is managed by a family which has been making ecologic/biodynamic wine since 1989. They asked us to design two vacational apartments within the Mas.

In order to respect the old winery, the original space wasn't touched. Instead, we designed a box which houses the whole program: the kitchen, the bathroom, and the bedroom. Each apartment only has a 20 square meters (220 sq ft) footprint, plus an outdoor pergola space. In the apartments, we applied a red color to the wooden panels to emphasize the wood grain, referencing wood barrels dyed by the wine making process.
