🇬🇧 🦠 Your microbiota gets energy by fermenting what you eat. But not all fermentation is equally good.
✅ Saccharolytic fermentation (of fibre and complex carbohydrates): produces short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate, acetate, and propionate. They nourish your colonocytes, lower intestinal pH, and keep opportunistic bacteria in check.
⚠️ Proteolytic fermentation (or putrefaction): occurs when there is an excess of undigested protein or a lack of fibre. It generates ammonia, biogenic amines, and compounds such as p-cresol, which raise colon pH and promote dysbiosis.
📊 A healthy gut requires the balance to tip clearly towards fibre fermentation. When it reverses towards putrefaction, the risk of chronic inflammation, intestinal permeability, and long-term imbalances increases.
💡 The good news: your bacteria always prefer fibre over protein. If you give them enough plant fibre (resistant starch, FOS...), the putrefaction process is halted almost immediately.
With Vivabioma we analyse your fermentative balance using Shotgun sequencing, to find out if your microbiota is in "cleansing" mode or "putrefaction" mode.
