👁️ MYOPIA AWARENESS SERIES — DAY 2

Why Does Myopia Develop?

Myopia doesn’t develop from a single cause. It is usually influenced by a combination of eye growth, genetics, and environmental or lifestyle factors.

🔬 Main optical factors:
• Axial length: Excessive elongation of the eyeball is the major structural factor associated with myopia.
• Corneal power: A steeper/stronger cornea can contribute to refractive myopia.
• Lens power: Changes in crystalline lens power can also influence refractive development.

🧬 Important risk factors:
• Family history of myopia
• Prolonged near work
• High visual demands
• Limited outdoor exposure
• Environmental and educational factors

🌿 Key message:
Genes matter, but the environment also plays an important role—particularly during childhood. Increasing healthy outdoor time is one practical habit associated with a lower risk of developing myopia.
