🦟 Dengue Fever Health Education at Samara Health Center 🏥

Today, we provided health education to patients and caregivers at Samara Health Center on Dengue Fever prevention and control. The session focused on raising awareness about the causes, signs and symptoms, prevention methods, and the importance of seeking early medical care.

Key messages shared: ✅ Keep surroundings clean and free of standing water.
✅ Use mosquito nets and repellents.
✅ Wear protective clothing when possible.
✅ Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, joint pain, or rash develop.

‎Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease that has become an important health problem in the Afar Region of Ethiopia. The disease is spread mainly by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in standing water around homes and communities.

‎Why dengue spreads in Afar
‎Several conditions in Afar increase dengue transmission:
‎Hot climate
‎Seasonal rainfall
‎Water storage in containers
‎Limited piped water supply
‎Standing stagnant water
‎Mosquito breeding around homes
‎Because many families store water in tanks, buckets, and containers for long periods, mosquitoes can breed easily. Studies in Gewane found mosquito larvae in plastic tanks, tires, buckets, and bowls.

‎Symptoms
‎Common symptoms of dengue fever in Afar include:
‎High fever
‎Headache
‎Joint and muscle pain
‎Pain behind the eyes
‎Weakness
‎Nausea and vomiting
‎Skin rash

‎Most patients recover, but severe dengue can cause:
‎Bleeding
‎Severe abdominal pain
‎Shock
