We must learn to help those who deserve it, not just those who need it.

This might be the toughest thing I ever learned about service and leadership, but it's absolutely essential.

When I was younger, I thought helping others meant helping everyone who asked. If someone needed help, I felt obligated to provide it. I wanted to be generous, kind, available.

But my mentor taught me something that changed my entire approach: "Jim, need is not enough. You must help those who deserve help through their effort, attitude, and willingness to apply what you give them."

At first, that sounded harsh to me. Isn't helping people about compassion? Doesn't everyone deserve help?

Then I started paying attention. I noticed some people I helped took action on what I gave them. They were grateful, they applied the knowledge, they grew. Helping them multiplied my impact—they became better and then helped others.

But others took my help and did nothing with it. They wanted the easy answer, the quick fix, the rescue. They weren't willing to do the work. Helping them was like pouring water into a bucket with holes in the bottom.

Here's what I learned: your time, energy, and resources are finite. If you spend them helping people who won't help themselves, you have nothing left for people who will actually use what you give them.

It's not about being cruel or uncaring. It's about being strategic. It's about maximizing your impact. It's about recognizing that you can't help someone who won't help themselves.

The people who deserve your help are those who show up, put in effort, apply what they learn, and demonstrate they value what you're giving them. They might not be the most talented or the most prepared—but they're willing to work.

This applies to leadership, parenting, friendship, business relationships—everything. Don't abandon those who need help, but be wise about where you invest your deepest service.

How do you balance compassion with wisdom in deciding who to help?

In life, there are days we feel vulnerable, and others where we discover an unexpected strength. Today, I choose to remember that courage isn’t the absence of fear, but the ability to move forward despite it. I am a queen, not by birth, but by the bravery of my heart.
