When you travel how many assistive products do you bring?

I prefer my cane for my every day cane because it's custom fit to me and it's STURDY!! I don't lean to my good side because I don't feel like I'm going to fall. Also, it's purple!!

For traveling, I like my foldable cane because I can put it in my carry on. I know I could bring my purple one but especially if I am traveling by myself it would be another thing to have to manage.

I had a walker that was bells and whistles. But it weighed 19 # and was hard to open and close. Especially if anyone was trying to help load it in my car. I bought a new rollator that was rated high with opening and closing it. It only weighs 13 # and literally just folds in half. Easy peasy. There is still a seat for me to sit when I need to. It also has foot petals to rest my legs on if we need to convert it to a wheelchair.

There are a lot of things to take into consideration when you looking for assistive products and it's definitely not a one size fits all situation.

Do you think bringing extra walking devices is overkill to bring on vacation? How many do you bring with you?

I am not a list writer. I get very overwhelmed by needing to complete 17 tasks. However, I can no longer keep a running list in my head and I am not the multi-tasker I was before Multiple Sclerosis. These days my family writes out a list for me as I dictate. Since I don't always have energy or time, I pick out what I call, "The Big 3" from the master list. These 3 things are the absolute most important things to get done: Pay that bill, call that doctor, wash the kids PE clothes, get groceries etc. Some days I can do more but The Big 3 are what needs to happen that day no matter what.

We went to Europe for our 20th Wedding Anniversary. We have never traveled internationally and we went to 3 countries so there were a lot of moving parts to this trip.

The night before we left back home, I knew I needed to figure out The Big 3: Laundry, Luggage and Logistics.

We stayed at Airbnbs so I was able to do laundry. It's always nice to come home from a trip with clean clothes to put away rather than 4 suitcases of dirty clothes.

We are carry-on travelers so space was limited. I brought vacuum bags to give us more space in our luggage because we were bringing home a few items we had bought. No one wants to be packing at 4am so we packed up the night before.

Lastly, was logistics to the airport. We ended our trip in Barcelona. You can Uber or take a taxi there pretty easily but there was always a long wait time to get a car. I decided to book our Uber 2 nights before so there wouldn't be any stress on a driver cancelling or a long wait time. It worked out perfectly! He was already there as we walked out to meet him.

Don't shame yourself if you can't get everything done on your list. Pick The Big 3 and take care of those. As a mom with MS, I've had to come up with ways to trick my brain to accomplish items on my To-Do list, solutions to remember things and asking for help if I need it.

Is completing The Big 3 something you'd like to try? Some days it might be The Big 1 or The Big 14. Pick the amount of items that are manageable to you. 🧡🧡

We travel pretty often BUT I had a panic attack for the first time about traveling.

We have never been overseas so I didn't know what to expect. You can only prepare so much for something unfamiliar. You can ask a million questions and still not get the right answer.

We are typically carry-on packers so my space was extremely limited. How do I pack to cover a variety of scenarios?

I bought a walker that can be converted to a wheelchair. I was bringing my walker but I was worried about the cobblestone streets and maneuvering around huge crowds of people. I opted for my folding cane because I could throw it in my travel backpack. (I prefer my cane because it's custom made to my size and the weight of it helps my balance.) The weather was supposed to be cooler and I can use my cane longer if it's not hot. I packed cooling towels, a fan and a purse fan for good measure.

Then the night before we left I freaked out. I just kept thinking what if we spent all this money and then everything goes sideways because I'm too broken to wander around Paris. What if we flew all the way over there and I ruined this trip by needing accommodations? I told my husband that if I needed to rest, he could park me somewhere and he could take the kids around. He firmly replied that we all go or we don't. My kids had practiced pushing me around in the wheelchair so the 3 of them could take turns if needed.

We wandered around Paris. Some parts I used my cane and some parts I used my walker. I had 3 people willing to cart me around so I didn't miss anything.

: When you think you're too broken for something, tell your mind to f**k off because you're going to enjoy yourself and see the World.

I appreciate the international sunflower program that shares with people who are trained to notice it, that a person has a hidden (or less obvious) condition/disability. The sunflower lanyard lets people know that the person has a hidden disability and may need to board early, may need extra time, might want to be the first on/first off, etc. Many of my friends who live with MS, also use this program because they may look "fine" but need accommodations while traveling.

While in London a stop in a pub was a high priority. We popped into pub. Lorraine was the sweetest! She was super attentive and remembered everyone's orders without writing them down. (A super hero trait for someone like me whose has chewed my memory up!) We had to order Guinness (and a mojito for me!) Fish n Chips, a Steak & Ale pie. She explained what mushy peas were so we decided to give those a go too! Even though I was very full, I had to order Sticky Toffee Pudding to round out my London food cravings. Everything we ate was delicious and the atmosphere was very pleasant. It was a lovely first time pub experience!

The later it gets in the week, the slower I move. It's harder to wake up, takes me longer to get breakfast ready, get dressed, we leave later for school, eventually I'll take a nap before I have to go pick my kids up. This insane California heat wave isn't helping either. Lol

Walk MS Inland Empire 2026!

26/03/2026

I was asked to share my story and open Inland Empire 2026.

This is a little chunk of my MS story. I also got to share the story of this year's Walk MS honoree. Fun Fact: her team has raised over $400,000 for since they formed their team!

I look forward to the "Orange Parade" every year 🧡🧡
