As dogs get older, mealtimes can change.

They might become fussier.
They might prefer softer textures.
They might need a bit more moisture.
They might enjoy smaller, more tempting additions rather than a big bowl of 'new things.'

Thatโ€™s where simple bowl boosting can be really useful.

You donโ€™t have to change their main food.

You can just add a little something alongside it.

A soft base.
A useful boost.
A tasty finish.

Something like:

Base: mashed sweet potato
Boost: shredded chicken
Finish: a drizzle of bone broth

Warm, soft, familiar, and easy to mix through their usual food.

Useful for dogs of all ages, but especially handy when your older dogโ€™s appetite, preferences, or comfort starts to shift.

There are days when I look at what I've prepared for the dogs and then look at my own lunch and wonder where I went wrong.

The dogs have carefully selected meals with herbs, nutritious toppers, fish oils, bone broth, and all sorts of thoughtful additions.

Meanwhile, I'm standing in the kitchen wondering if a piece of toast and a cup of tea counts as a balanced meal.

And don't even get me started on Storm.

At the moment, he has very strong opinions about what belongs in his bowl. One week it's chicken, the next it's fish, then it's yoghurt, then it's something else entirely.

I've spent more time discussing menu options with my dogs than I have with most humans.

Please tell me I'm not the only one whose dog occasionally eats like royalty while they're surviving on whatever happens to be in the fridge! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’š

Have you ever made a poultice?

A poultice is one of the oldest herbal preparations around, yet many modern dog owners have never tried one.

In simple terms, a poultice is made by mixing herbs with a little liquid to create a paste, which is then applied externally to the area needing support.

Herbalists have traditionally used poultices when they wanted to keep herbs in direct contact with the skin for a period of time.

One of the simplest ways to make a poultice is to:

๐ŸŒฟ Choose your herb.
๐ŸŒฟ Add a small amount of warm water.
๐ŸŒฟ Mix until you have a thick paste.
๐ŸŒฟ Apply to a cloth before placing over the area.

Simple, effective, and rooted in centuries of herbal tradition.

Inside the Natural Dog First Aid Academy, we explore herbal preparations like poultices in much greater detail, helping you build practical skills and confidence so you're not just collecting herby - you're learning how to use them.

Because knowing a herb is useful is one thing.

Knowing what to do with it is where the magic begins. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿพ

Iโ€™m giving one of my older freebies a proper senior-dog makeover. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿพ

For a while, Iโ€™ve had a guide called ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฏ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ž๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฏ๐˜† ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—–๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—˜๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€.

It was useful, but it was very much built around the idea of having a few herbs ready for those 'oh no, what now?' dog-life moments.

And I still think that matters.

But lately, especially with Storm getting older, Iโ€™ve been thinking more about the slower, everyday kind of support.

The herbs you might want to understand because your senior dogโ€™s needs are changing.

A little more comfort.
A bit more calm.
Gentler digestion.
Skin that needs extra care.
Evenings that feel less settled.
Food preferences that seem to change by the hour.

So Iโ€™m updating the guide and turning it into:

๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฝ๐—ณ๐˜‚๐—น ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฏ๐˜€ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐——๐—ผ๐—ด๐˜€

Itโ€™ll be a gentle starter guide for anyone who wants to begin learning how herbs may support an older dog naturally - without feeling like they need to buy the whole herb shop by Friday.

Each herb will have a simple overview, common uses, a little caution, and an easy way to start getting to know it.

No giant textbook.

Just a friendly place to begin if youโ€™ve got a golden oldie at home and want to feel a little more prepared as their needs change.

Iโ€™ll share more when itโ€™s ready. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿพ

If you share your home with an itchy dog, you'll know the sound.

The scratching in the middle of the night.

The constant licking of paws.

The chewing, nibbling, and rubbing that leaves you wondering how to help.

That's exactly why I created ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—น๐—บ ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—œ๐˜๐—ฐ๐—ต.

Inside ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—น๐—บ ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—œ๐˜๐—ฐ๐—ต, you'll discover herbal ideas, skin-supporting remedies, and practical tips designed to help you build your own herbal toolkit for itchy dogs.

Because sometimes the first step isn't finding a miracle cure.

It's understanding the options available to you.

If there's one herbal oil I always like to have on the shelf, it's calendula oil.

Made by infusing calendula flowers into a carrier oil, this golden oil has been treasured by herbalists for generations.

One reason it's so popular is its versatility. Calendula oil is often used as the base for balms, salves, paw preparations, and skin-supporting products. It's also wonderfully gentle, making it a favourite for dogs with sensitive skin.

I think of calendula oil as one of those herbal cupboard staples that quietly earns its keep. You may not use it every day, but when you need it, you'll be glad it's there.

Whether you're interested in herbal first aid, DIY grooming products, or simply building a small collection of useful herbal ingredients, calendula oil is a great place to start.

A bottle of calendula oil may not look exciting, but it can become one of the hardest-working items in your herbal cupboard. ๐Ÿ’š

We're entering one of the highest pollen periods of the year, and when we think about pollen, we tend to think about itchy skin.

But some dogs can also experience watery eyes, sneezing, or mild irritation during high-pollen periods.

If you've noticed your dog rubbing their face, blinking more than usual, or having slightly weepy eyes after walks, pollen may be worth considering as one possible cause.

A few simple things that may help include:

๐ŸŒฟ Wiping around the eyes with a clean, damp cloth after walks.

๐ŸŒฟ Rinsing paws and coats if your dog has spent time in long grass.

๐ŸŒฟ Keeping bedding clean to reduce the amount of pollen brought indoors.

๐ŸŒฟ Avoiding walks in areas where pollen levels seem particularly high.

Of course, persistent eye problems, discharge, or ongoing sneezing should always be checked by your vet, as there can be many possible causes.

Sometimes the clue isn't scratching at all - it might be a sneeze, a watery eye, or a face rub that tells you your dog is finding pollen season a little challenging. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿพ

When people think about herbs for dogs, they often think of chamomile, calendula, or peppermint.

But what about red clover?

Traditionally, red clover has been used as a gentle cleansing herb and is often included in herbal blends designed to support dogs with long-term skin issues and chronic itching.

While herbs are never a magic wand, red clover has a long history of use when the skin needs a little extra support.

The best part?

You may already be walking past it on your daily dog walk. Those pretty pink-purple flower heads that appear in meadows and grassy areas throughout summer are often red clover.

Not keen on foraging? That's perfectly fine too. Dried red clover flowers are widely available from reputable herbal suppliers, health food shops, and online herb retailers.

Once you have some dried red clover, it can be used to make a gentle herbal tea, infused into oils, or added to herbal blends alongside other skin-supporting herbs.

As always, herbs work best as part of a bigger picture. If your pooch struggles with ongoing itching, it's worth looking at diet, environment, grooming products, and overall health alongside any herbal support.

Sometimes the most useful herbs are the ones hiding in plain sight. ๐Ÿ’š

If I asked Storm, the answer would be very specific.

Costco chicken and broth made with Costco chicken.

Not my lovely home-roasted chicken.
Not perfectly nice supermarket chicken.
Costco chicken.

Apparently he has standards now.

Emmylou, on the other hand, would probably request anything she has seen a human touch in the last 14 seconds!

Chicken.
Yoghurt.
Sardines.
A stolen tomato.
Possibly the corner of a shopping receipt if it looked interesting enough.

Dogs definitely have opinions about food.

Sometimes those opinions are helpful.

Sometimes they are really inconvenient.

But noticing what they enjoy can be useful, especially when youโ€™re trying to add a little extra nourishment, variety, or bowl appeal without overhauling their whole diet.

A spoonful of yoghurt.
A little mashed pumpkin.
Some shredded chicken.
A few blueberries.
A splash of bone broth.

Small things, but they can make an ordinary bowl much more interesting.

So tell me - what does your dog always hope youโ€™ll add to their bowl?

Storm would like to know if anyone else is taking chicken preferences seriously!!

I love a quick tip as much as anyone.

But sometimes itโ€™s nice to sit down with a cup of tea and read something that doesnโ€™t disappear the second you scroll past it.

Thatโ€™s why I write The Herby Hound newsletters twice a week.

On Wednesdays, I send a more personal note from Herby Hound HQ - usually involving Storm, Emmylou, something odd that happened that week, or a sentence I never expected to say out loud.

Somehow, it usually finds its way into a herbal tip, bowl booster idea, or simple natural care suggestion for dogs.

Then on Fridays, things get extra herby.

Youโ€™ll get 4 quick herbal ideas straight to your inbox - things to make, herbs to plant, seasonal dog care tips, senior dog support, first-aid-style ideas, bowl boosters, and simple ways to care for your dog more naturally.

No dancing.

No trying to cram everything into 30 seconds.

Just useful dog-care ideas, slightly spoilt dogs, and a slower little corner of the internet.

If that sounds like your sort of thing, come and join us.
