There are days when I look at what I've prepared for the dogs and then look at my own lunch and wonder where I went wrong.

The dogs have carefully selected meals with herbs, nutritious toppers, fish oils, bone broth, and all sorts of thoughtful additions.

Meanwhile, I'm standing in the kitchen wondering if a piece of toast and a cup of tea counts as a balanced meal.

And don't even get me started on Storm.

At the moment, he has very strong opinions about what belongs in his bowl. One week it's chicken, the next it's fish, then it's yoghurt, then it's something else entirely.

I've spent more time discussing menu options with my dogs than I have with most humans.

Please tell me I'm not the only one whose dog occasionally eats like royalty while they're surviving on whatever happens to be in the fridge! 🐾💚

Have you ever made a poultice?

A poultice is one of the oldest herbal preparations around, yet many modern dog owners have never tried one.

In simple terms, a poultice is made by mixing herbs with a little liquid to create a paste, which is then applied externally to the area needing support.

I’m giving one of my older freebies a proper senior-dog makeover. 🌿🐾

For a while, I’ve had a guide called 𝟭𝟬 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗯𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗯𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀.

It was useful, but it was very much built around the idea of having a few herbs ready for those 'oh no, what now?' dog-life moments.

And I still think that matters.

But lately, especially with Storm getting older, I’ve been thinking more about the slower, everyday kind of support.

The herbs you might want to understand because your senior dog’s needs are changing.

A little more comfort.
A bit more calm.
Gentler digestion.
Skin that needs extra care.
Evenings that feel less settled.
Food preferences that seem to change by the hour.

So I’m updating the guide and turning it into:

If there's one herbal oil I always like to have on the shelf, it's calendula oil.

Made by infusing calendula flowers into a carrier oil, this golden oil has been treasured by herbalists for generations.

One reason it's so popular is its versatility. Calendula oil is often used as the base for balms, salves, paw preparations, and skin-supporting products. It's also wonderfully gentle, making it a favourite for dogs with sensitive skin.

I think of calendula oil as one of those herbal cupboard staples that quietly earns its keep. You may not use it every day, but when you need it, you'll be glad it's there.

Whether you're interested in herbal first aid, DIY grooming products, or simply building a small collection of useful herbal ingredients, calendula oil is a great place to start.

A bottle of calendula oil may not look exciting, but it can become one of the hardest-working items in your herbal cupboard. 💚

We're entering one of the highest pollen periods of the year, and when we think about pollen, we tend to think about itchy skin.

But some dogs can also experience watery eyes, sneezing, or mild irritation during high-pollen periods.

If you've noticed your dog rubbing their face, blinking more than usual, or having slightly weepy eyes after walks, pollen may be worth considering as one possible cause.

A few simple things that may help include:

🌿 Wiping around the eyes with a clean, damp cloth after walks.

🌿 Rinsing paws and coats if your dog has spent time in long grass.

🌿 Keeping bedding clean to reduce the amount of pollen brought indoors.

🌿 Avoiding walks in areas where pollen levels seem particularly high.

Of course, persistent eye problems, discharge, or ongoing sneezing should always be checked by your vet, as there can be many possible causes.

Sometimes the clue isn't scratching at all - it might be a sneeze, a watery eye, or a face rub that tells you your dog is finding pollen season a little challenging. 💚🐾

When people think about herbs for dogs, they often think of chamomile, calendula, or peppermint.

But what about red clover?

Traditionally, red clover has been used as a gentle cleansing herb and is often included in herbal blends designed to support dogs with long-term skin issues and chronic itching.

While herbs are never a magic wand, red clover has a long history of use when the skin needs a little extra support.

The best part?

You may already be walking past it on your daily dog walk. Those pretty pink-purple flower heads that appear in meadows and grassy areas throughout summer are often red clover.

Not keen on foraging? That's perfectly fine too. Dried red clover flowers are widely available from reputable herbal suppliers, health food shops, and online herb retailers.

Once you have some dried red clover, it can be used to make a gentle herbal tea, infused into oils, or added to herbal blends alongside other skin-supporting herbs.

As always, herbs work best as part of a bigger picture. If your pooch struggles with ongoing itching, it's worth looking at diet, environment, grooming products, and overall health alongside any herbal support.

Sometimes the most useful herbs are the ones hiding in plain sight. 💚

If I asked Storm, the answer would be very specific.

Costco chicken and broth made with Costco chicken.

Not my lovely home-roasted chicken.
Not perfectly nice supermarket chicken.
Costco chicken.

Apparently he has standards now.

Emmylou, on the other hand, would probably request anything she has seen a human touch in the last 14 seconds!

Chicken.
Yoghurt.
Sardines.
A stolen tomato.
Possibly the corner of a shopping receipt if it looked interesting enough.

Dogs definitely have opinions about food.

Sometimes those opinions are helpful.

Sometimes they are really inconvenient.

But noticing what they enjoy can be useful, especially when you’re trying to add a little extra nourishment, variety, or bowl appeal without overhauling their whole diet.

A spoonful of yoghurt.
A little mashed pumpkin.
Some shredded chicken.
A few blueberries.
A splash of bone broth.

Small things, but they can make an ordinary bowl much more interesting.
