One of the things I love about getting to know herbs properly is realising just how much you can do with one bag of dried flowers.

Take calendula.

You haven't just bought an ingredient for one remedy. That little bag can be turned into all sorts of useful things.

Probably the simplest place to start โ€” dried calendula flowers and hot water give you a preparation that can then be used in several different ways.

Soak a clean cloth in the cooled infusion and you've got a simple way to apply calendula to a small area of skin.

The cooled infusion can also be used when you want to gently rinse or soothe a larger area.

Steep the dried flowers in a suitable carrier oil and you've created something completely different - and very handy to have sitting in the cupboard.

Add a little wax and your infused oil becomes an easy-to-use balm for minor dry, rough areas.

Another useful preparation to know, particularly when you want the herb to stay in contact with one small area.

And this is exactly why I don't think you need shelves full of different herbs.

I'd much rather know one herb seven ways than own seven herbs and not really know what to do with any of them.

That's when your herbal cupboard actually starts becoming useful. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿพ

It's a fair question.

If your dog already eats a complete food, why bother adding anything to it?

For me, bowl boosting isn't about suggesting there's something wrong with the food you're already feeding. And it certainly isn't about turning every meal into a complicated nutritional project.

It's simply about adding a little variety.

A few blueberries bring something different to the bowl. A little oily fish brings useful omega-3 fats. An egg adds high-quality protein and other nutrients. A spoonful of natural yoghurt can add a different taste and texture - and many dogs absolutely love it.

It also gives you an easy way to introduce your dog to different whole foods without changing their entire diet.

And that's the bit I really like.

You don't have to throw out the food your dog already eats. You don't have to completely rethink how you feed them. You can simply look at today's bowl and think:

What little extra could I add today?

Some days that might be an egg.
Some days a spoonful of veg.
Some days nothing at all.

Because bowl boosting isn't about making every meal perfect. It's about having a collection of simple ideas you can use whenever you fancy giving your dog's usual bowl a little something extra.

And that's exactly what ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฌ ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜†๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—•๐—ผ๐˜„๐—น ๐—•๐—ผ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜๐˜€ gives you - 30 days of ideas to try, mix, match and come back to again and again.

Fennel isn't one of the herbs that gets much attention in the dog world, but it's a handy one to know about.

Traditionally, fennel seed has been used to support digestion, particularly when there's a bit of wind, bloating or general digestive grumbling going on.

And here's a useful little tip...

Make a weak fennel seed tea, let it cool completely and freeze it in an ice-cube tray.

Then you've got tiny portions tucked away in the freezer rather than having to make a fresh batch every time you want some.

You can thaw one when needed and add a little of the liquid to your dog's food - assuming fennel is suitable for your individual dog, of course.

Just make sure you're using fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare) rather than fennel essential oil. They're very different things, and essential oils aren't something I'd casually add to a dog's bowl.

A cheap little bag of seeds, one ice-cube tray and suddenly you've got another useful trick tucked away in your herbal toolkit.

I'll go first...

One of our park friends has a Borzoi who once ate an entire chicken skewer.

And I don't just mean the chicken.

He ate the wooden skewer too!

The following day he vomited the whole thing back up - skewer intact. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

He was incredibly lucky, because swallowing something like that can be very dangerous.

But honestly... dogs.

Give them a perfectly good dinner and apparently they'd still rather eat something they found behind a bin.

Your turn.

What's the most ridiculous thing your dog has ever eaten?

Food, socks, underwear, unidentified park objects... I want to hear them. ๐Ÿ˜‚

At least once a week, I let Emmylou choose where we're going.

No particular route. When we get to a turning, I see which way she wants to go and follow her.

Sometimes this results in a surprisingly short walk. Apparently she's had a quick sniff, checked everything is in order and that's quite enough for one day!!

Other times, we end up on a real ramble and I start wondering whether she actually has any idea where she's taking me.

I love doing it, though.

We spend so much of our dogs' lives deciding things for them - when they eat, when they go out, where they walk and when it's time to go home.

So every now and then, it's rather nice to hand over the navigation.

It also reminds me that what makes a good walk for me isn't necessarily what makes a good walk for Emmylou. I might be thinking about distance or getting around a particular route. She's far more interested in where the best smells are and who's been through the park before us.

So if you've got nowhere particular to be one day, try it.

Let your dog choose the walk.

You might be home in ten minutes.

Or you might want to take snacks. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿพ

Stop Comparing Your Dog's Dinner To Instagram Bowls!!

You know the ones.

A beautiful handmade bowl containing seventeen different ingredients, all arranged perfectly around the edge. A sprinkle of seeds here, three blueberries there, something green and mysterious in the middle... and not a smear of fish anywhere on the kitchen worktop.

Lovely.

But your dog's dinner does not need to look like that to be worth boosting.

A bowl booster can be ridiculously simple.

A spoonful of natural yoghurt.
Half an egg left over from your lunch.
A little mackerel.
Some blueberries straight from the freezer.
A spoonful of cooked veg you've put aside before seasoning your own dinner.

That's it.

You don't need twelve ingredients in every bowl, and you certainly don't need to spend half an hour arranging them beautifully. Your dog is going to demolish the whole thing in approximately 43 seconds anyway. ๐Ÿ˜‚

That's really the idea behind

I've done the thinking for you and put together a month's worth of simple ideas you can dip into whenever you want to add something different to your dog's usual food.

No Instagram-worthy presentation required.

Just real food, real bowls and ideas that are actually doable in real life!

Same food.

Different bowl.

When dogs get older, you start noticing that some of the things they've done without thinking for years suddenly take a bit more effort.

And sometimes ridiculously small changes can help.

If your dog spends most of the afternoon snoozing in one particular room, pop some water nearby. There's no rule saying you can only have one water bowl in the house!

Wooden floors and tiles can be horrible for old legs. Rugs, runners and even strategically placed bath mats can make getting around much easier.

If bending right down isn't as comfortable as it used to be, some dogs may find a slightly raised bowl easier. It won't be right for every dog, but it's worth noticing whether mealtimes have become awkward.

The sofa they've slept on for ten years doesn't suddenly become less important because they can't jump onto it anymore. A little step or ramp can keep favourite spots within reach.

This is a big one. If they want to spend ages sniffing one particular patch of grass, let them. If getting up takes a bit longer, give them a minute. And if today's walk is half the distance it used to be, that's fine too.

You don't always need to buy something or make a big change to make life better for an older dog.

Sometimes you just need to notice what's getting harder - and find a little way around it. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ

One thing I wouldn't recommend when your dog's tummy goes wrong?

Reading 47 different Google results!!

We've all done it.

Your dog's tummy isn't quite right, so you have a quick Google to see what you should do.

Five minutes later...

One website says feed them.

Another says don't feed them.

One says bland food. Another says that's terribly old-fashioned.

Someone in a Facebook group says chicken and rice has worked for every dog they've owned since 1987.

Someone else says absolutely NOT chicken and rice.

Then you find an article listing seventeen possible causes, three of which you can't pronounce, and suddenly the innocent tummy gurgle you started with appears to require an MRI and a team of specialists.

Twenty minutes ago you had a dog with a dodgy tummy.

Now you have a dog with a dodgy tummy and you're completely confused.

The problem isn't that there's not enough information out there.

There's masses of it.

The difficult bit is knowing what's relevant, what's reliable and what actually applies to the dog sitting in front of you.

Sometimes you don't need more information.

You need to know which information matters.

And preferably without having to open another 47 tabs to find it!!

Some days, making your dogโ€™s bowl better needs to be quick.

You open the fridge.

Thereโ€™s half a lemon, something suspicious in a tub, and no inspiration whatsoever.

This is where the freezer helps.

A few small things kept ready can make it much easier to add moisture, flavour, variety, or a little extra nourishment to your dogโ€™s usual food.

Hereโ€™s what Iโ€™d keep on hand (number 4 is my favourite):

Freeze bone broth in an ice cube tray, then add one cube to the bowl and let it melt slightly. Lovely for adding moisture and making food smell more tempting.

Plain cooked sweet potato freezes well in small spoonfuls. Itโ€™s soft, naturally sweet, and handy for adding a bit of comfort and texture to the bowl.

Easy, cheap, and already freezer-friendly. Add a few to the bowl, or let them soften first if your dog prefers them that way.

Mash sardines in spring water and freeze in tiny portions. This is one for dogs who need tempting, because the smell does a lot of the work.

Small portions of cooked carrot, courgette, green beans, or sweet potato can all be frozen and added when you want a simple fresh extra without cooking from scratch.

Use plain natural yoghurt, spoon tiny dots onto baking paper, freeze, then keep them in a tub. Handy as a cooling topper or small treat.

The important bit is to keep portions small.

A bowl boost is an addition, not a second dinner.

And if your dog has a sensitive tummy, introduce one new thing at a time so you know what suits them.

This is exactly the kind of thing ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฌ ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜†๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—•๐—ผ๐˜„๐—น ๐—•๐—ผ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜๐˜€ helps with - simple ideas using everyday foods, so youโ€™re not standing in front of the fridge hoping the answer appears.

Same main food.

Better bowl.

15 and the link is in the comments.
