Who should get tested for coeliac disease?
Some people may be at increased risk of coeliac disease, even if they donβt have symptoms.
NICE recommends that testing should be offered to people with certain conditions, including type 1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease and before a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is given. Testing should also be considered for people with Down syndrome or Turner syndrome.
Coeliac disease can also run in families. Around 1 in 10 close relatives of someone with coeliac disease are at risk, so if your parent, child, brother or sister has coeliac disease, you should speak to your GP about getting tested.
If you have symptoms of coeliac disease, itβs also important to discuss these with your GP. You can take our online assessment to check whether your symptoms may be related to coeliac disease.
