When you're at the tills in Home Bargains and suddenly realise it looks like you're going to feed the fake dog you've bought.

Cue my social anxiety explaining that I do have a real dog and that I'm not as unhinged as my shopping would suggest.

At least I didn't need p**p bags too, eh? ๐Ÿคฃ

I went back to school this week.

Here is my obligatory "first day of school" photo.๐Ÿคฃ

As much as I'd like to rewind the clock to a time when my biggest worries included which flavour of crispy pancakes I was getting for my tea or if I could p*e faster than an ad break (IYKYK!), I haven't actually gone back to school as a learner.

This time, I've gone back as a School & Pupil Support Assistant to support children with additional support needs.

This is something I've been working towards for a few years now, juggling studying, work, and being Mum and, whilst it's only two days a week, it's a step in the right direction towards my goal.

And, even though I'm not back at school as a student, there's certainly a lot for me to learn.

Week 1 is in the bag and it's been a LOT - but all the worthwhile things are! ๐Ÿ˜Š

As I walked along the beach at the weekend, I pondered the week ahead; the kiddo going back to school, me going back to work - and starting my second job later in the week.

Was I making the right decision taking on another job? Should I wait until I get a full-time job rather than be in 2 places over the week? Is my new career path the right one for me?

To get these thoughts out of my head, I spoke to the one person I wish I could pick up the phone to, but can't - my Granda Jim.

I asked him to give me a sign to tell me that I am making good choices, and that everything would be okay.

Given he was a Bacardi drinker, I was expecting a sea glass tumbled piece of Bacardi bottle - but he had something better in mind.

A few minutes later, as I walked back along the beach, I looked down and this sea glass marble was at my feet.

Message received, Granda!

It was back to school for a brand new school year today and the kiddo was rocking her new school bag that she decorated herself (with a little help from Dad ๐Ÿ˜).

Buying school uniform is usually a chore but, this year, it was surprisingly easy.

She wanted the exact same trainers that she had last year, because she liked them and knew they were comfortable - โœ…๏ธ

She asked for a plain black hooded cardigan - โœ…๏ธ

She wanted smart but baggy trousers - โœ…๏ธ

And a plain black bag to cover in patches - โœ…๏ธ

The hardest (but not unreasonable) ask was a couple of polo shirts that weren't "scratchy" because she hates the feeling of them against her skin. But I managed it and she's delighted with how soft they are (although the tags had to go! ๐Ÿ™„) - โœ…๏ธ

Sensory overwhelm is no joke. If our kids are uncomfortable and distracted by how their clothes feel, then how can we expect them to be able to concentrate in class?

So, the least I can do as a parent, is make sure her shirts aren't scratchy, her trousers aren't too tight - and that my wee Star Wars geek has got space on her bag to glue an ewok patch to!

The force is definitely with her! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Is anyone else's afternoon looking like this - your kiddo detests the feeling of labels in their clothes, so you need to remove them from their new school uniform whilst simultaneously trying to find somewhere for their name labels? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

It's been an ordeal! ๐Ÿ˜‚

My mental health has not been great recently. It tends to be a bit of a roller coaster (which is why I write about it) but, my mood has been more low than high over the past while.

When you struggle with your mental health, you quickly realise that nobody is coming to save you - that you can only save yourself.

Taking the first step is always the hard part. Sometimes you are perfectly aware that you're in need of help and, sometimes, it creeps up on you.

It crept up on me this time.

But I did get help and I am being supported.

But I also need to take positive steps for myself to keep myself on an even keel.

So I've been finding joy in the little things this Summer.

The hard part will be keeping it going as the nights draw in and my mood changes with the seasons - I'll be in my element in Autumn (the best season) but, as I hate Winter, that will be a tough time again for me.

Hopefully some of the good stuff I've been doing recently can keep me going through the darker months.

What do you do to help your mental health all year round?
