A little insight into my clinical caseload today 🩺✨

A real mix of presentations and treatment approaches in clinic today, all with one goal in mind: helping people move better, feel stronger, and continue doing what they love.

Clinical Pilates, Hip Osteoarthritis Rehab, Cervical spine pain, Lumbar spine pain, acute knee pain and maintenance treatments on the caseload today.

No two patients are the same, and neither is their treatment. It’s about understanding the person, adapting the approach, and working together towards meaningful, long-term outcomes.

Turns out, spending hours renovating the garden is a great way to find out just how good your own advice really is… 😂

Yep — I’ve got sciatica ⚡️⚡️⚡️

After taking on a rather ambitious garden refurbishment project, my hip and leg decided they’d had enough of my DIY enthusiasm! 🛠️🌿

Sciatica is very common, affecting millions globally year on year… including me currently

For me, the symptoms have included that familiar combination of pain, irritation and altered sensation travelling from the lower back/buttock into the leg — and anyone who has experienced it will know that it can be very frustrating.

So what am I doing about it?

➡️ Mobility work
➡️ Isometrics
➡️ Stretching where it’s actually tolerable
➡️ Anti inflammatories as required
➡️ Staying as active as my symptoms will allow
➡️ And, perhaps most importantly, not panicking every time something hurts!

There’s also a certain irony here…

I treat people with these sorts of problems regularly in clinic, give advice on managing symptoms and gradually rebuilding confidence in movement — and now I get to experience being the patient myself. 😅

It’s a useful reminder that even when you know what you’re doing, being in pain can make you question everything!

So, I’m going to share the journey as I work my way back — the good days, the frustrating days, what I’m doing, and hopefully what works.

Follow along as I attempt to practise what I preach… while trying not to blame the garden too much 🌿😂

👐 Think osteopathy is just about bad backs and sore necks? Think again.

Osteopaths can assess and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal problems, including:

✨ Back & neck pain
✨ Headaches & tension
✨ Shoulder & arm pain
✨ Hip & knee pain
✨ Sports & exercise-related injuries
✨ Muscle & joint pain
✨ Postural & movement-related issues
✨ Pregnancy-related aches and pains

Osteopathy is about looking at how your body moves and works as a whole, rather than simply focusing on where you feel the pain.

So if you thought osteopathy was just for backs and necks… now you know! 👀

📍Got an issue that’s affecting your everyday life, training or movement? It might be worth getting it assessed.

A day in the life of an Osteopath 👐🏼

Starting the day in the gym 💪🏼 before heading into clinic for a busy day of treating patients.

From hands-on treatment to demonstrating exercises and explaining why we’re doing them, a big part of my job is helping patients understand their body and giving them the tools to keep progressing outside of the clinic.

Lots of movement, plenty of problem-solving, some great conversations and a very busy clinic later… and that’s me done for the day at 6pm! 🕕

I wouldn’t have it any other way

Sometimes your body gives you little clues before a problem becomes a bigger one.

Maybe it’s the stiffness when you get out of the car.

Maybe your neck feels tight after a day at your desk.

Or perhaps that same niggle keeps coming back.

These things are worth paying attention to.

Not every ache means something is seriously wrong — but understanding what’s going on can be a useful first step.

A little clinic update and availability news for you all! 🩺

From this month onwards, I’ll be working Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday all day, as well as Saturday mornings.

I also have some availability over the coming weeks for new patients. So, if you’ve been struggling with an injury, have something you’d like checked over, or know someone who has been struggling, feel free to message me and get booked in.

I’d be more than happy to help! 😊

One thing I think we don’t do enough as healthcare professionals is celebrate the wins.

A patient came to see me about four weeks ago with shoulder stiffness, weakness, neck pain, and a lot of tightness through their upper back.

Now, it would have been easy to just focus on the shoulder. But as we talked, it became clear that this story started much earlier.

About six months before, they’d been unwell. During that time, they’d become much less active. They’d lost strength, their confidence in movement had dropped, and gradually their body adapted to doing less.

This is why I always say that the symptoms are only one part of the story.

As osteopaths, our role is to understand the whole person. What’s important to them? What are they struggling to do? Why has this happened? We carry out a thorough assessment, make sure it’s safe to treat, explain our diagnosis and prognosis, and help people understand what’s driving their symptoms.

From there, we worked together to build a plan.

We set meaningful goals. We improved shoulder mobility. We rebuilt strength. We used hands-on treatment where it was appropriate, but just as importantly, we gave them the tools and confidence to help themselves.

Four weeks later, they’re moving better, they’re stronger, their neck and upper back are much more comfortable, and they’re getting back to doing the things that matter most to them.

And that’s worth celebrating.

Because success in healthcare isn’t about creating dependency. It’s about helping people understand their body, regain confidence, and get back to living the life they want.

Sometimes, in our profession, we’re so busy moving on to the next patient that we forget to pause and appreciate these moments.

For me, these are the moments that remind me exactly why I love being an osteopath.”

One of the biggest mistakes people make when they’re in pain is stopping all movement.

It might seem like the right thing to do, but complete can often lead to increased stiffness, reduced strength, and a longer recovery.

In most cases, the goal isn’t to stop moving—it’s to find the right type and amount of movement that your body can tolerate.

Movement helps maintain joint mobility, muscle function, circulation, and can even reduce pain sensitivity over time.

If you’re struggling with pain, don’t assume rest is the answer. Get assessed, get a plan, and keep moving in a way that’s right for you.

Pain doesn’t always mean damage, and movement isn’t always harmful.

Why does your back keep “going”?

Most people assume they’ve damaged something every time their back flares up…

The reality is often very different.

Poor sleep, stress, inactivity, doing too much too soon, and everyday life can all contribute to making your back more sensitive from time to time.

The movement that triggers the pain is often just the final straw—not the real cause.

If you’re stuck in a cycle of recurring back pain, there may be more you can do than simply waiting for it to settle.

One thing I’ve been seeing a lot of in clinic lately is the impact stress can have on the body.

Many people come in with neck pain, headaches, jaw tension, back pain, muscle tightness, poor sleep, or recurring aches, often without realising how much stress may be contributing to their symptoms.

When we’re under prolonged stress, our bodies stay in a heightened state of tension. Muscles remain guarded, recovery slows down, sleep quality suffers, and minor aches and pains can become persistent problems.

While treatment can help reduce the pain and improve movement, addressing the underlying stress is often just as important. Regular exercise, good sleep habits, time outdoors, and taking moments to switch off can make a significant difference to how you feel day to day.

If you’ve been carrying more stress than usual and your body is starting to let you know about it, don’t ignore the signs.

Your body and mind are more connected than you might think.
