Meditation may do more than simply reduce stress. Researchers at Harvard University studied participants in an eight-week mindfulness-based stress reduction program and performed brain scans before and after the course. The findings suggested measurable changes in gray matter density in regions associated with memory, learning, self awareness, and emotional regulation.

The study, led by neuroscientist **Sara Lazar**, also reported reduced gray matter density in the amygdala, a region involved in stress and fear responses. These changes were correlated with participants’ reported stress reduction. While this does not mean meditation “rebuilds” the brain overnight, it supports the concept of neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to adapt structurally and functionally in response to experience. The results highlight how consistent mental training can influence brain structure over time, though effects vary between individuals.
