This week, we stepped into the offices of Baker & Mckenzie Global Services Ni Limited to share our story. 💗

I'll be honest — walking into a corporate room and speaking my truth was so far outside my comfort zone.

Sharing something so personal, in a setting like that, takes a deep breath and a lot of courage.

But then we receive a feedback message like this and it makes every nervous moment worth it.

Because if we can help even one person in a room like that feel seen, supported, or a little braver to speak — then we're exactly where we're meant to be. We're on purpose.

A heartfelt thank you to Helena Woodward and her incredible team for welcoming us so warmly, and to everyone at Baker McKenzie for opening your doors to this conversation.

And to the person who took the time to send these words — they mean more than you know.

Breaking the silence, one lil whisper at a time. 🕊️

Someone asked me this week why I speak publicly about my own abuse.

It’s a fair question. It costs something every time.

My answer is this.

For most of my life, I lived in silence. Not because I had nothing to say — because I was afraid of what would happen if I spoke the truth.

I thought no one would believe me.

That I’d be judged. Blamed. Too much, or not enough.

So I buried it. Locked it away. That deep, dark secret I promised myself I’d never talk about.

And in doing so, I kept myself small.

Motherhood changed that. Looking at my children, I knew the silence had to stop with me.

Not all at once. And not every conversation was easy.

But piece by piece, I stopped running from my story.

Speaking up was never about getting the perfect response. It was about reclaiming my voice. Letting go of shame.

If you’re still carrying something you haven’t said out loud — this is for you.

It doesn’t have to be a speech.

It can be a whisper.

Silence is an insidious epidemic. Too many live the quiet tragedy of violence, thinking silence equals safety. But we change this—one voice, one story at a time. Let’s band together and break this culture of silence. How will you spark the change?

17/05/2026

I carried the silence of childhood sexual abuse for over 30 years.

And I know I’m not alone in that.

So many people are still carrying things they were never meant to carry alone — quietly, painfully, and without anywhere safe to put them.

That’s why we created Lil’ Whisper.

A gentle, anonymous space where survivors can share a few words, part of their story, or simply say something out loud for the first time.

And for allies, it’s a place to leave messages of hope, compassion and support — so survivors know they are believed and never alone.

Because healing doesn’t always begin loudly.
Sometimes it begins with just a lil whisper.

For so long, I thought my body was something I needed to fix… now I realise it’s something I need to thank. ❤️

Strong mind.
Strong body.
Strong energy.

For years, my relationship with my body was complicated. I carried shame, trauma and disconnection and honestly… spent more time criticising my body than appreciating everything it had carried me through.

Healing changed that. But it’s taken time to land here.
These days, I care way more about feeling healthy, strong and happy than being “smaller.”

and the community around it became a huge part of that journey for me. Not because of aesthetics… but because of how it made me feel.

Confident.
Capable.
Strong again.💪

And I won’t lie… I do love banging and clanging a barbell too 😂❤️

There’s something pretty empowering about realising your body isn’t the enemy.
Now I try to move it, fuel it and look after it from a place of respect instead of punishment.

And for any survivor struggling with their relationship with themselves or their body… please know this:

Your body is not the enemy.
Be gentle with yourself. Healing takes time ❤️

And as my granny always said…
“Leanne… you may be small, but remember—you are mighty.” ❤️

Still one of my favourite reminders.

Strong women.🙌
Strong community.
Strong minds.

That’s healing too.❤️

Last Friday night was a meaningful one at the Chairperson’s Civic Awards 2026 — a night of in Newry, Mourne and Down.

Firstly, thank you to Laura Devlin SDLP for the nomination and for standing beside me — your support means more than I can put into words. Congratulations as well to all of the other winners; it was a real celebration of community spirit, and We As One is proud to be part of that.

For almost 30 years, I carried the secret of sexual abuse quietly. Some of the people closest to me didn’t know. So standing in a room of 250 people from my local community, knowing my past and this work would be acknowledged, was not a small thing.

If I'm honest, when I saw the size of the crowd, the old fear surfaced — that familiar whisper of shame: “They’re going to know I’m a victim of sexual abuse.” Many victims and survivors will recognise that wobble, even years into healing.

But then I remembered our why. I had a quiet word with myself. :) This conversation is needed more than ever right now. Survivors deserve to feel supported — not shamed. Heard — not hidden.

And shame? It needs to change sides. So I chose to stand in it anyway — not just for me, but so others don’t have to carry their story alone for decades.

Thank you to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and the Chairperson Cllr. Philip Campbell who shared the stories on the night with such care.

There is still more to do, but this felt like a step forward — together we're breaking the silence!

We are incredibly proud to share this. 😀

We As One is live.

What began as a personal decision — to stop carrying things quietly and speak openly about healing — has grown into something much bigger.

We As One is now a dedicated hub for survivors and allies of sexual abuse and violence.

Rooted in Awareness. Education. Support.
Built on lived experience.
Created to bring voices together — in strength, solidarity and hope.

Abuse, trauma and violence are not isolated experiences.
They affect every family, every community, every generation.

When we listen, believe, educate ourselves and support survivors — change happens.
When we speak openly and stand together — harm loses its power.

This is Phase One of breaking the silence.

You are part of the change.

We invite you to visit the site, explore the content, share it with others, and stand alongside survivors in a way that feels right to you.

Together, we can create spaces of light, understanding and real support.

I created this guide to share what helped my healing journey.❤️‍🩹

This resource comes from my own experience — from what supported me when things felt overwhelming, confusing, or heavy.

I created it because I know how hard it can be to take that first step, and how much it matters to feel seen and supported when you do.

The Survivor Toolkit is a free guide filled with gentle tools, reflections, and reminders that helped me — and that I hope can support you too.

You don’t have to do everything at once.
You don’t have to have it all figured out.
You’re not alone in this.

✨ You can download the Survivor Toolkit by clicking here: https://mailchi.mp/weasone/we-as-one-survivor-toolkit

This is just the beginning — and I’m really grateful to share it with you. ❤️
