🌊 359 DAYS TO THE ENGLISH CHANNEL

Another training day. Another step forward.

Over the past few years, I've learnt that some of the most important things in life aren't taught when everything is going well.

They're learnt when things get difficult.

Through martial arts, I've learnt about discipline — turning up even when you don't feel like it.

I've learnt about resilience — getting knocked down and finding a way back up.

I've learnt about setbacks — understanding that they aren't the end of the journey, they're part of it.

And I've learnt that mindset can change everything.

Now I'm taking those lessons into the water.

359 days until I face the English Channel.

I'm still an average swimmer.

There's still a huge amount of work to do.

But I'm not trying to become the fastest swimmer.

I'm trying to become the swimmer who can keep going.

Every session is another opportunity to build the body.

Every difficult session is an opportunity to build the mind.

Every setback is an opportunity to learn.

And every day I turn up is another step towards that shoreline in France.

I don't know exactly how long the Channel will take.

12½ hours? 16 hours? 17 hours?

It doesn't matter.

The goal isn't the time.

The goal is the other side.

So today, I train.

Tomorrow, I train again.

And slowly, day by day...

I'm becoming the person who can do this.

🌿 Water Retention & Traditional Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), water retention, puffiness and a feeling of heaviness may be viewed as part of an underlying pattern of imbalance rather than simply a problem with fluid itself.

Depending on the individual, a TCM practitioner may consider patterns such as Spleen Qi deficiency, Spleen Yang deficiency, Kidney Yang deficiency, Dampness or Phlegm-Damp accumulation. In some cases, Qi stagnation may also form part of the overall picture.

TCM looks at the whole person when identifying a pattern. Your digestion, energy levels, urination, sleep, appetite, thirst, menstrual cycle, temperature preferences and general wellbeing may all form part of the consultation.

How can acupuncture help?

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is traditionally used to help support the body's regulation of Qi and fluid metabolism, address patterns of Dampness and strengthen the body's functional systems according to the individual TCM diagnosis.

Treatment may also be combined with dietary and lifestyle advice, cupping or naturopathic support, depending on your individual needs.

🌿 Understanding the 24-Hour Traditional Chinese Medicine Body Clock

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the 24-hour body clock is a traditional way of understanding how Qi (vital energy) is believed to flow through the body's meridian system throughout the day and night.

The clock divides the 24-hour period into 12 two-hour intervals, with each period traditionally associated with one of the body's major meridians and its corresponding organ system.

For example:

5am – 7am | Large Intestine
Traditionally associated with elimination and the movement of waste from the body.

7am – 9am | Stomach
A time traditionally associated with digestion and receiving nourishment, making breakfast an important meal.

9am – 11am | Spleen
Associated in TCM with the transformation of food into Qi and nourishment, as well as concentration and mental activity.

11am – 1pm | Heart
Traditionally associated with circulation, emotional wellbeing and connection.

1pm – 3pm | Small Intestine
Associated with separating what is useful from what is not, both physically and symbolically.

3pm – 5pm | Bladder
Traditionally connected with fluid metabolism and elimination.

The cycle continues through the Kidney, Pericardium, Triple Burner, Gallbladder and Liver before returning to the Large Intestine.

Why is the TCM Body Clock important?

The body clock is not simply about watching the time. In TCM, it forms part of a wider understanding of balance, lifestyle and individual health patterns.

A practitioner may consider factors such as sleep, digestion, energy, emotions and the timing of symptoms when developing a Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis.

For example, if someone consistently notices a particular symptom occurring at roughly the same time each day, this may form part of the information considered during a TCM consultation.

The TCM body clock therefore provides another way of looking at the relationship between your daily routine, your body's natural rhythms and your overall wellbeing.

At Serenity, this is considered alongside your individual health history, lifestyle and other TCM diagnostic information. No two people are treated in exactly the same way.

🌿 What is Painful Cold Bi (Tong Bi) in TCM?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Bi Syndrome refers to patterns traditionally associated with obstruction of the flow of Qi and Blood through the body's channels and meridians. When Cold is considered the predominant factor, this is often described as Cold Bi or Tong Bi.

This pattern is traditionally associated with fixed, aching or stabbing discomfort, stiffness and restricted movement, with symptoms that may feel worse in cold conditions and improve with warmth. Some people may also experience greater stiffness on waking that gradually eases with movement.

From a TCM perspective, the practitioner looks at much more than the location of the discomfort. Your symptoms, general health, energy, sleep, digestion, lifestyle and other individual signs are considered together to identify your particular pattern.

How may acupuncture be used?

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is traditionally used to help move Qi and Blood, warm and regulate the channels and address patterns of obstruction. Depending on the individual, treatment may also incorporate approaches such as cupping, moxibustion and lifestyle advice.

At Serenity, there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. Each consultation is individualised, with the aim of understanding the person behind the pain rather than simply treating the symptom.
