🍁 Today is feeling very autumnal! It's certainly colder and there's a freshness in the air.
As the season is changing it seems timely to think about how a change in weather can affect our activity levels and how that might impact on you.
As the days get colder and darker many of us will begin to notice that our joints and muscles feel a little stiffer than they did during the summer.
Whilst colder weather doesn’t necessarily cause musculoskeletal pain, changes in temperature and what we are doing day to day can all influence how our bodies feel.
Amie, our physiotherapist has put together a few ideas to help you to keep moving comfortably this autumn 🍂
🔥 Keep warm
Cold muscles can feel tighter and more prone to injury. Layer up before heading outside, particularly if you’re exercising or walking early in the morning.
🚶 Keep moving
As the weather changes, it’s easy to become less active. Try not to let shorter days mean less movement. A daily walk at lunchtime, some gentle stretching away from your desk and regular movement breaks can make a big difference.
🏋️ Don’t abandon your exercise routine
If you usually exercise outdoors, think about alternatives for wetter or colder days. Consider home workouts, going to the gym, swimming or participating in an indoor class instead.
🪑 Be mindful of your posture when you’re indoors
Autumn often means more time sitting at desks, working from home or curling up on the sofa in the evening! Try to change your position regularly rather than searching for the so called “perfect” posture.
⚡️Listen to your body
If you’re experiencing persistent pain, don’t simply put it down to “the cold weather.” If your pain is not going away, getting worse or affecting your sleep or daily activities we're here to help. Get in touch by email or give us a call!
As we head into autumn, keep warm, keep moving and look after your body! 🍁
