CPR / AED usage on female casualties

Recent data suggests that women are around 27% less likely to receive bystander CPR than men, hesitation is often linked to uncertainty about touching or exposing the female’s chest, removing clothing, or placing defibrillator pads correctly.

The Resuscitation Council UK advises that if someone is wearing a bra, it may be possible to adjust or lift the fabric so the pads can be placed correctly on bare skin without delay; however, if the bra interferes with correct pad positioning, it should be removed or cut away.

In practical terms, the quickest and clearest way to apply AED pads is often to cut or remove the bra, especially where it obstructs the correct pad position.

Students should understand that they do not need to feel embarrassed or hesitate: preserving life is the priority. Once the pads are in place, clothing can be placed back over the chest where possible to help preserve dignity without delaying treatment.

MCP First Aid Training provides essential training in the recognition and management of penetrating chest injuries, including the treatment of sucking chest wounds using various vented chest seals.

Learners are taught how chest seals help prevent air entering the chest cavity through an open wound while allowing trapped air to escape, reducing the risk of a tension pneumothorax.

Training includes casualty assessment, correct application techniques, ongoing monitoring, and when to seek immediate emergency medical assistance.

Vented chest seals are designed for rapid application in emergency situations and can maintain an effective seal even in challenging conditions.

All training is delivered by experienced instructors and combines current best practice ensuring learners develop the confidence and skills required to respond effectively to life-threatening chest injuries.
