5 everyday obstructions wheelchair users shouldn’t have to deal with 🚨

– Cars parked on pavements and dropped kerbs
– Piles of rubbish left on pavements
– E-bikes dumped on paths and crossings
– Outdoor furniture spilling into the street
– Overgrown bushes blocking access

For many Disabled people, these aren’t rare issues, they happen almost every time they leave the house. A simple journey can instantly become dangerous or impossible, forcing people into the road or onto lengthy detours.

That’s why we’ve launched our new campaign, , and we need your help to call out these everyday barriers. 📢

Want to join the movement?

Order your free Clear the Kerb sticker pack via the link in our bio.

Carry them with you, sticker obstructions in your area, and share your photos online (don’t forget to tag us!) to help start conversations about what safe, accessible streets should look like.

Let us know your experiences with these barriers in the comments! 👇

“Am I the problem here… or is it the steps?” 👀

How society understands disability shapes everything - from how spaces are designed to who gets shut out of them.

The Medical Model of disability looks at the person and asks: “What’s wrong with them?” It locates disability inside the individual - something to be treated, fixed, or managed.

The Social Model shifts the focus to the environment and asks: “What’s getting in the way?”

It draws a crucial distinction: a person may have an impairment - a condition or difference in how their body or mind works - but they are disabled by environments, systems, and attitudes that weren’t built with them in mind.

In other words: impairment is real. Disability is what happens when the world isn’t designed to include it.

So when you add a ramp, widen a doorway, or rethink a space, you’re not “fixing” the person - you’re removing the barrier, and the exclusion that came with it.

Accessibility was never about fixing people. It’s about designing environments where more people can take part, move through the world, and belong.

What’s a barrier in everyday life that you think too many people overlook? 👇💬

Everyday, Disabled people face unnecessary barriers from blocked pavements and dropped kerbs. You can help change that today! 🚨

Join Sociability’s movement!

Bins, e-bikes, parked cars, and outdoor furniture might look like minor inconveniences, but they force Disabled people into dangerous roads, cause lengthy detours, or stop journeys entirely. 🚧

That’s why we’ve launched free sticker packs to place on temporary obstructions. Each sticker calls out the barrier and reminds people that our streets must be safe and accessible for everyone.

You don’t have to be Disabled to get involved - this campaign is for everyone. The more people who spot, sticker, and share barriers (tag us!), the harder they are to ignore. 📢

Want to take action? Order your free sticker pack via the link in our bio.

Carry them with you, snap a photo when you use one, and help us make accessibility impossible to ignore. 🤝

Can you actually get the tram as a wheelchair user? 🚋♿️

On our recent trip to Sheffield, we went to find out for ourselves. The offers step-free, level boarding across the network on all trams and platforms, without the need to pre-book assistance.

We did notice that the gap can vary slightly between trams and at different times, and staff told us this is due to air pressure.

Most platforms are fairly level, with some sloped sections, and have blue wheelchair symbols in the tram windows to help guide you to the accessible carriage.

Inside, the wheelchair spaces were reasonably spacious, with accessible buttons and enough room for both of us to fit comfortably.

Accessibility isn’t one-size-fits-all, what works well for one person might still be a barrier for another. That’s why real lived experiences matter.

Have you used the tram before? What was your experience like? 💬👇

You use accessibility features every single day without even realising it! 👀

From automatic doors to ramps, escalators, and curb cuts, these are all examples of design choices that make everyday life easier for everyone.

This is what’s known as the Curb Cut Effect: when something is designed for Disabled people or people with specific access needs, it ends up benefiting everyone.

Like curb cuts on pavements, originally designed for wheelchair users, but now used by parents with prams, delivery workers, cyclists, travellers with suitcases, and anyone navigating a busy street.

Or ramps and automatic doors, which don’t take anything away from non-disabled people, they just make spaces more usable for more people.

Accessibility isn’t about adding extra inconvenience. It’s about removing barriers and improving access for everyone.

What accessibility features can you think of that benefit everyone? Let’s chat in the comments! 💬👇

Everyday barriers wheelchair users face series, episode 4 ♿️🛍️

This reel focuses on the accessibility barriers wheelchair users often face while shopping:
– Shelves that are too high to reach independently
– Mirrors placed too high to use properly
– Narrow or cluttered aisles that are difficult to navigate
– Card machines and counters that are out of reach
– Lifts being out of order with no accessible alternative

For many wheelchair users, these aren’t small inconveniences, they’re barriers that can make shopping frustrating, inaccessible, or completely impossible.

Accessibility in shops isn’t just about having a ramp at the entrance. It’s also about being able to move around the space, reach items, pay independently, and actually use the facilities provided.

What shopping barriers do you come across most often? Whether you’re a wheelchair user or have different access needs, we’d love to hear your experiences below 💬👇
