🌡️ Yesterday we looked at why many women find hot weather more challenging. Today, we’re turning our attention to men.

At first glance, it might seem as though men simply cope better with the heat—but the science is more interesting than that.

Research suggests that men and women regulate body temperature in different ways.

Men generally begin sweating earlier and often produce more sweat during exercise or in hot conditions. As sweat evaporates from the skin, it removes heat, making it one of the body’s most effective cooling systems.

That doesn’t necessarily mean men are “better” in the heat.

Sweating more also means:
💧 Greater fluid loss
🧂 Increased salt loss
🥵 A higher risk of dehydration if fluids aren’t replaced

Body composition plays a role too. Men typically have more muscle mass, which generates more heat during exercise. A well-trained body can become very efficient at coping with heat, but it still needs adequate hydration and recovery.

The take-home message?

Our bodies are brilliantly designed—but they don’t all work in exactly the same way.

Understanding how your own body responds to heat can help you exercise more safely, recognise when you need to slow down, and take better care of your wellbeing during warmer weather.

Whether you’re male or female, listen to your body, stay hydrated, and don’t be afraid to adapt your plans when temperatures rise.

🌡️ Why do some women struggle more in hot weather?

Have you ever noticed that you’re searching for shade while someone else seems perfectly comfortable in the same temperature?

It might not be your imagination.

Research suggests that women can regulate heat differently to men. Women often rely more on increasing blood flow to the skin and may sweat less at the same level of exertion. While both methods help cool the body, sweating is one of our most effective cooling mechanisms.

Hormones can also play a significant role. Changes in oestrogen and progesterone throughout life – particularly during perimenopause and menopause – can influence body temperature, hot flushes and overall comfort in warm conditions.

Other factors may contribute too:

☀️ Higher body fat percentages can provide additional insulation

☀️ Hot flushes can make warm weather feel even more intense

☀️ Sports bras, fitted clothing and long hair can trap heat and moisture

☀️ Some medications can affect heat tolerance and hydration

The result? Many women find heatwaves, exercise and warm environments more challenging than they expected.

So if you’re feeling more tired, irritable or drained during hot weather, it may not simply be a question of fitness or resilience. Sometimes it’s physiology.

Be kind to yourself:

💧 Stay hydrated

🌳 Seek shade when possible

🏃 Adjust exercise intensity in hot weather

😴 Prioritise rest and recovery
