Golden Mung Dal Pancakes 🥞✨
Light, grounding, and easy on digestion
Looking for a morning meal that leaves you energized without the food coma? These savoury mung dal pancakes (traditionally known as chilla) are naturally gluten-free, rich in plant protein, and known in Ayurvedic cooking for being gentle on the gut and calming for the mind.
Quick Details
Serves: 2 (makes ~4–5 thick pancakes or 8–10 mini pancakes)
Prep Time: 5 mins (plus soaking)
Cook Time: 15 mins
Ingredients
1 cup split mung dal (yellow mung lentils)
1 tsp freshly ground roasted cumin seeds
½ tsp turmeric powder
Himalayan pink rock salt (to taste)
3 tbsp ghee (for cooking)
Water (just enough to blend)
How to Make It
1. Soak the Dal
Rinse the mung dal thoroughly until the water runs clear. Cover with water (about 1 inch above the lentils) and soak overnight, or for at least 3 hours. Drain and give it one final rinse.
2. Blend the Batter
Transfer the soaked dal to a blender. Add water gradually—using as little as possible—and blend until smooth and the texture resembles standard pancake batter. Add the ground cumin, turmeric, and pink salt, then pulse briefly to combine.
3. Cook in Ghee
Melt a spoonful of ghee in a skillet over medium heat. Pour in a ladle of batter and gently spread it outward in circles.
4. Flip & Crisp
Cook for about 5 minutes, until the edges lift and the underside turns golden-brown. Flip, add a drizzle of ghee around the sides, and cook the other side for another 5 minutes until crisp and cooked through. Repeat with the remaining batter!
Serve with: Fresh cilantro-mint chutney, warm herbal tea, or a side of steamed greens for a grounding breakfast, hearty brunch/lunch with a bowl of mung dal soup and crispy salad 🌱✨🦶
