Ok I’m rarely on social media but here’s some great lactation resources made by others. I’ll start creating content myself soon. After 25 years of midwifery, many years as a lactation consultant and tongue tie specialist I have knowledge and resources I should share. Promise I will!

My cup is full! Just completed 2 days of conference learning/updating/skill sharing on the most recent research and evidence based practice surrounding tongue tie, complex lactation issues and cleft lip and palate. Wonderful to meet colleagues from around the country and learn from the best. Grateful to the Association of Tongue tie Practitioners for organising such a great conference. 25 years in midwifery, 11 years as a tongue tie practitioner and 9 years in lactation consultancy (IBCLC). Committed to ongoing learning and providing women and families with skilled support. Love my work ❤️

After our baby had dropped weight and was jaundiced we arranged for Anouk to come for an assessment. She provided us with so much more; on going support, kindness and compassion. She not only gave us a plan for our baby but also explained what was happening at each stage allowing me to feel more confident with what was happening. Our baby has now progressed and is doing well due to the expertise and support that Anouk gave us. We were treated as individuals and I have already recommended her services onwards. Thank you Anouk.

Just received this heartwarming review from a lovely mum and her gorgeous little baby boy!

😍

Anouk saw me and my nearly 10 week old in our hour of need and it was the best thing we have done. For around 5 weeks, breastfeeding (and eventually bottle feeding) had become increasingly more challenging. In that time we had seen various health visitors, breast feeding supporters, peadiatricians, GPs and an osteopath and nothing seemed to help our little boy. He was becoming inconsolable and it was distressing for all of us.

Anouk was really calming and explained everything she was doing carefully, and clearly. She performed a frenulotomy on our son and the improvement has been dramatic. We are keeping up with the stretches and exercises but we are just so pleased to have our happy, smiley, calm baby back. His gas is basically non existent, his smile hardly leaves his face, he sleeps better, and he is much more content.

Anouk has checked in with us to make sure all is well and I would not hesitate to reach back out to her in the future.

We know that nothing is a magic cure, and there is still hard work ahead of us, but none the less it feels magic to us.

If you are having problems feeding I can’t recommend her enough ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Breastfed babies can feed irregularly in the same way we do. Sometimes they want simply to latch on and are instantly comforted and may or may not want to feed for long. Other times they will want both breasts and then both breasts again in a short period of time. Many babies want to hang out in the breastaurant all day and all night long, enjoying the all-you-can-eat-buffet!. This happens commonly during neurological leaps or growth spurts. The first 6 weeks are all about building your milk factory. By allowing your baby to take all they need, you are setting up a robust milk supply that will take them through the rest of your lactation journey. Their brains grow over 60% in the first 90 days outside the womb!Having partners, friends or family around to support you in the early days can have a huge impact on successfully meeting your feeding goals and navigating the early days of milk building and getting to understand your little one.

Human milk is a living fluid. It changes hour by hour, day by day, week by week and year by year. It adjusts to meet infants developmental and immunological needs. Human milk contains cells that actively target and fight infections. Every single drop is precious. Breastfeeding doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Every drop is valuable.

Baby humans need the comfort and security of bodily contact with their mother and caregivers. Being held closely leads to feelings of safety which leads to low cortisol (stress hormone) and higher oxytocin (love hormones). When babies feel safe their brains 🧠 wire and fire optimally. Studies demonstrate that babies who are carried more cry less. Little people need help regulating their emotions and can’t be spoiled by too many cuddles 🥰

Did someone say your baby is just lazy on the breast? Don’t listen! Your baby is not lazy! Babies love a good flow of milk. If the supply or flow is an issue a baby may seem sleepy or disinterested on the breast. When the flow is steady, a baby will continue to actively suckle and drink. It may be that your baby was born a little early or for some reason, simply needs a bit more help to get all the milk they need. Using breast compressions or switch feeding can help them get more milk. Seek the help of a skilled IBCLC if you have any concerns.

Having lots of cuddles and skin to skin as soon as possible after birth, primes your prolactin (milk making hormone) receptor sites. Encouraging frequent and effective breastfeeds ensures a full milk production. The early days are crucial to success. If you are separated from your baby or your baby is unable to feed effectively, start hand expressing every 2-3 hours. Your milk supply will increase day by day. At around 2-3 weeks you may be making around 750mls per day!

Have you been asked that question? I remember being asked that question by my husbands great aunt (I think she was eating a meringue at the time!) Honestly! We wouldn’t say that to an adult would we! Breastmilk is digested very quickly and so baby humans need to feed frequently. Babies may feed for hunger or comfort (like us!). In addition to that human babies are born rather immature and so do a significant amount of growing in the first couple of years of life. Human milk contains everything a baby needs for the first 6 months of life and has the perfect sugars and composition for a rapidly growing brain. Most breastfed babies will feed 10-12 times in 24 hours and also have periods of cluster feeding.
