We had a great workshop on Saturday at Green Wolf Cafe . We talked about herbal medicine, its origins and why we don’t use it as much here in England as other countries still do across the world. We also had a fairly short walk about to discuss the herbs growing all around (it was very windy and quite cold) but we did find a lovely patch of self heal growing in the cafe grounds. Then after some refreshments everyone blended their own samples of herbal teas. Thank you to everyone who came, we had some wonderful discussions and as always everyone brought their own knowledge and ideas to the group. ☺️🌱

Herbs have energetics, they are living beings tolerating weather systems and connecting with all that nature offers. They can be cooling, warming, drying, moistening, energising, calming and so much more. This is why one particular herb to say, settle the nerves, will work well for one person but not so well for the other and why being able to understand and listen to your body and your own energetics is so important. Of course a herbalist can help you to understand this and find the right herb, or herbs that will help balance you as an individual, unique person. Herbalism is not a one size fits all because, let’s face it, it doesn’t. 🌱

🌱Adaptogens are a group of plants that herbalists use along with dietary and lifestyle advice, to help the body to adapt to stress, support metabolic function and restore balance.

🌱Physically they help to balance the endocrine system and modulate the immune and nervous systems. Ashwagandha root pictured here is an example of an adaptogen as are medicinal mushrooms.

🌱To make sure you are getting the support you need from these amazing plants it is very important to seek the advice of a herbalist as one herb does not suite all, which I think is often the problem when people say that they tried a herbal supplement and found it did nothing. Also consider:

🍄‍🟫 quality of supplement

🍄‍🟫 time you have taken them (it often takes several weeks to see changes especially on a body that has been suffering for some time)

🍄‍🟫 what else are you doing to help yourself feel better (diet, relaxation, sleep etc)

If you would like any more information or need support and would like to try herbal medicine please drop me a line.

I took this picture of a Lady’s mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris) plant that we bought at the weekend. The typical picture you see of this beautiful plant with drops of morning dew, or rain I think this morning, gathered on the leaves. Putting this morning water on your skin is supposed to help keep ladies beautiful and youthful!
I use this plant in my tea a lot as I love the flavour but also because it has such an affinity with women young and old. It can help with heavy, painful me**es, promote fertility, tone a weak pelvic floor and aid contractions and recovery after child birth. It should only be used in the last few weeks of pregnancy and afterwards, if in doubt please consult a trained herbalist. It is also cooling and balancing during menopause so can be used all the way through our reproductive lives. 🌱

The plants around us ep 4: Nettle or Urtica dioica. A wonderful nutritive plant that is so easy to find. Infuse in hot water to absorb its many gifts (vits A and C, iron, calcium, silica and potassium). It is also an anti-histamine, try taking it two to three times a day if you suffer from hay fever in the months leading up to allergy season and see how much better your body deals with the pollen. Urtica can relieve gastritis, peptic ulcers, acid indigestion and diarrhoea. It can also be used to stimulate milk production in lactating mothers. Its anti-inflammatory properties will help to clear eczema, psoriasis and acne as well as other chronic skin conditions. I think the most interesting thing about nettle though is its uses for the urinary system as the roots can help with a benign enlarged prostate and the seeds (specifically the female seeds) can improve and restore kidney function! What a powerhouse of a plant!! 🌱

Few pics of the herbs and flowers growing in my garden. Finally got a reasonable crop of calendula from last years plants, for some reason it is not easy to grow in my garden, possibly because of the amount of shade. 🌱
