Why a piece of my heart will always be with the NHS 💚

Having spent a large part of my career working in the NHS as a Public Mental Health Lead, I have delivered a lot of training to health care professionals.

It was a pleasure to revisit one of my longest standing clients, the Work Opportunities Team at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust a few weeks ago.

We spent a great morning together refreshing their Mental Health First Aid skills. It was great to hear how they are applying their training in real world situations within the NHS, and how they plan to take their roles forward.

I look forward to working with you all again soon.

If you work in a healthcare setting and want to enhance your knowledge and skills around mental health, get in touch [email protected]

Get back to the day job!

Mental health awareness and turning awareness into action IS my day job 😆, its Promote Mental Health

As we come to the end of another successful Mental Health Awareness week the social media chatter around mental health goes a little more quiet. But for me this is the work I do everyday, and it's important that we are doing the same in the workplace.

What should you do after Mental Health Awareness week?
➡️ Keep the conversations going
➡️ Continue to check in with colleagues and your team
➡️ Invest in your Managers with Mental Health Skills training
➡️ Embed a strategic approach to retain staff, reduce sickness absence and increase productivity
➡️ Listen and get insights from your employees by measuring wellbeing

Lets chat and work together to develop a mentally fit workplace where you people can thrive [email protected]

Taking Action

I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this week and it has not really felt like work. I feel very lucky to be able to say that about my work at Promote Mental Health

This week, taking action around Mental Health has looked like:

✅ Online lunchtime webinars on 'Surviving and Thriving in the Workplace'
✅ Face to face training of senior managers, learning and development teams and front facing staff
✅ Training over 100 people in mental health awareness in 3 days 🙃
✅ Joining a local radio station LIVE as their mental health expert
✅ Being interviewed for a University Research study on my work with the criminal justice system.

It has been a bumper week for Mental Health Awareness week, but this is the work I do all year round.

Cambridge Radio 💚

One of the highlights of this very busy Mental Health Awareness week was joining Stefan Wilkinson-Hill LIVE this morning on Cambridge Radio 105.

We discussed all things mental health with a focus on taking action in the workplace, how we can manage SATS and exam stress and what support is out there for our mental health. We also talked about evolution and cave people!

I am excited to be joining Stefan Wilkinson-Hill as their Mental Health expert going forward with a monthly slot - Watch this space.

Got to get better at the selfies!

As it is Mental Health Awareness Week, it’s a perfect opportunity for me to reintroduce myself.

I’m Claire Harris, a Chartered Health Psychologist and Founder of Promote Mental Health. I build mentally fit workplaces, so your people can thrive.

Through tailored training I can help your organisation retain staff, lower sickness absence and increase productivity.

But I also take it a step further that just training delivery. I help you look at your strategic approach to wellbeing and develop or enhance psychological safety and a positive workplace culture - where employees feel comfortable speaking up about stress, are supported by managers, and have a healthy work-life balance. I can also help you measure the impact of these interventions in the workplace.

I offer Mental Health First Aid Training and implementation, training for managers and teams and workshops and bespoke programmes around stress, resilience, self-care, work-life balance, boundaries and practical tools and tips for wellbeing.

I have worked in mental health for over 25 years and I also integrate my own personal experience into training delivery. Alongside the business I use running and yoga to maintain my mental health and a good work/life balance.

After over 25 years of being involved in Mental Health Awareness week, it’s great to see that this year’s theme is about ‘Taking Action’.

This is a more proactive approach towards behaviour change, and the development of positive workplace cultures.
Action in the Workplace

Taking action at an organisational level means a shift in mindset from awareness and tick box activities, to embedding mental health at the heart of the organisation. Workplaces that have:
➡️ Sign up from the top
➡️ Engaged senior managers
➡️ Invested in wellbeing
➡️ Psychological safety - where people feel free to speak openly
➡️ A positive workplace culture – where they feel valued, that they belong and are listened to
will be far more likely to succeed in embedding positive wellbeing
Individual action

Small steps can make a big difference. If we can identify our own stress triggers, we can find the right tools to manage these, such as walking in nature or talking to a friend. It’s also vital that we reaching out for support when we are finding life challenging rather than waiting until we are burnt out and struggling to cope.

What small action could you put in place today?

Mental health awareness still has its place, as there is still stigma around mental health. Unfortunately, we still need a day to raise awareness of it. Could you imagine if we had a ‘physical health awareness day’ I can’t wait for the day where we don’t need it any more.

I look forward to the next 25 years!
