Let’s Talk About Periods: What’s Normal and When to Ask for Help
Periods are a natural part of life, but they can be different for everyone. It’s important to understand what’s considered normal and when it might be time to speak to a healthcare professional.
What is a “normal” period?
• Comes every 21–35 days
• Lasts between 2–7 days
• Blood loss is around 30–80ml (a few tablespoons to half a cup)
• Some mild cramping is normal
Common signs of menstrual irregularities:
• Periods that are very heavy or last longer than 7 days
• Very painful periods that interfere with daily life
• Bleeding between periods or after s*x
• Missing periods for more than 3 months (and you’re not pregnant)
• Periods that come too often (less than every 21 days) or too far apart (more than 35 days apart)
• Sudden changes in your cycle
When to ask for help:
If your periods are affecting your physical health, emotional wellbeing, or quality of life — it’s time to talk to a healthcare professional. Irregular periods can be linked to conditions like PCOS, fibroids, endometriosis, thyroid disorders, or hormonal imbalances — all of which are manageable with the right support.
