As an MSK physio, many of my patients have injuries that inhibit their ability to run. They want to get back to running pain free......I want to know their WHY.

WHY is running important to YOU? This can help me, as your physio tailor your rehab to your needs and help me motivate you.

WHYs I hear:

- I love being outdoors
- I need the time alone
- I run with a friend and we catch up
- It really helps my mood
- I'm training for an event
- I'm really enjoying running for the first time
- It's free and accessible exercise
- It helps me sleep
- It's part of my training for my sport
- It helps me manage my weight
- I think I may be addicted to running
- I hate running but it's the most convenient cardiovascular exercise for me
- I'm running a marathon for charity
- I'm trying to get a PB
- I love exploring local routes
- It builds my muscle strength
- It helps me manage my health conditions
- It is part of my routine
- It helps me feel more confident
- Supports my addiction recovery
- The sense of achievement
- It always has been part of my identity
- I want to test my physical limits
- Self-discipline
- It makes me feel free

Before treating the injury, understand the runner.

Knowing WHY someone runs often shapes the best path back to running.

If you are being held back from running by pain or injury and want some support - let's talk.

People with joint hypermobility are often drawn to dance, gymnastics, yoga.... Places where use of full or deep range of movement of joints is encouraged and even celebrated. 🤸🏼‍♀️

Being in a hypermobile body, I find that I want to move my body through it's full range regularly. It feels good. It feels expressive.

Does anyone else get that?! 🤔

So as a physio and qualified yoga instructor, I encourage hypermobile people to explore their joint range of movement in whichever activity brings them joy and learn to do so safely by focusing more on mobility and stability which are active (involve muscle control) rather than flexibility which is passive.

I was at one time fearful of my body, didn't understand why I was in pain and getting injured so much. It was through understanding hypermobility in my early 20's it all started to make sense and I was able to take control and work with my body, rather than abuse it unintentionally.

So one of my core missions is to help bendy people feel strong and confident and at ease in their bodies, and do the things they love!

May is EDS* & HSD Awareness Month - a cause that’s very close to my heart, both professionally and personally 🤍

I’m a physiotherapist with hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD), and it’s shaped my life in ways that bring both challenges and strengths.

Throughout this month, I’ll be sharing insights, education, and practical tips to raise awareness of these often misunderstood conditions - thought to affect around 15–20% of the population, the majority being women.

Early recognition and understanding can make a huge difference to how these conditions are managed (something I learned the hard way!).

You might recognise some of the signs in yourself, your sister, a friend, or a teammate. My hope is that this space helps more “bendy” bodies feel understood, supported, and able to move through life with greater ease 💫

As a physio, I see this every week—
People stopping their lives because of pain or fear of making things worse.

But here’s the truth:
You don’t need a perfect body to live a full life.

Movement can be modified.
Strength can be built.
Confidence can be rebuilt.

Message me if you want help feeling confident and carefree in your body again.

Ligaments are soft tissue structures in our bodies that join bone-to-bone. They are like the seatbelts that stabilise joints, and limit them from moving beyond the range they are designed to move.

Ligaments can be less able to do so due to:
➡️ Hypermobility
➡️ Repetitive sprains
➡️ Hormonal influences (e.g. in pregnancy, menstrual cycle, menopause)
➡️ Muscle imbalance in surrounding muscles
➡️ Muscle fatigue
➡️ Temperature changes
➡️ Joint swelling
➡️ Age related changes
➡️ Systematic conditions affecting connective tissue (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus, EDS)

So if you are suffering from ligament sprains or pain that feels deep and near the joint, it's important to understand the influencing factors firstly.

Then what can be done about it?

The key to protecting our ligaments:
✅ Build strong, well timed muscles
✅ Improve joint control and proprioception
✅ Avoid exercise fatigue
✅ Warm up well
✅ Improve movement mechanics
✅ Manage joint mobility - not too much/ too little
✅ Progress load gradually
✅ Manage overall joint health
✅ Train fast reactions and plyometrics regularly

Key take away:
💡 Ligaments are like seat belts they're there for emergencies. Your muscles and balance system are the real protection so the stronger and more coordinated that they are the less strain on your ligaments.

✨ Want help building stronger more stable joints?
If you are dealing with noodles recurring sprays or just want to feel more confident in your movement drop me a message- happy to help you get started.

As a physio, I spend a lot of time talking about exercise.
But this is your reminder that movement doesn’t have to look serious.

Tried padel for the first time this week and it ticked all the boxes:
✅ Social
✅ Fun
✅ Surprisingly good cardio
✅ Didn’t feel like “exercise” at all
...and that was on a cold Monday night outdoors in Cardiff in January!

If you’re stuck thinking movement has to be the gym, running, or perfection — it doesn’t.

👉 The best exercise is the one you enjoy enough to come back to.

If pain is holding you back from trying something fun, physiotherapy can help. DM me if you are curious to know more or book via link in my bio.

Thanks for the guest pass and your patience as my padel partner 🙃

✨ 15-Min Energy Reset ✨

Move, breathe, and recharge your body in minutes:

1️⃣ Lymphatic hops – Relax, bounce, exhale to boost lymph flow
2️⃣ Body wave – Mobilize ankles, knees, hips for fluidity
3️⃣ Trunk twists – Release tension, wake up your spine
4️⃣ Ballet squats – Strengthen legs, improve posture
5️⃣ Arm swings – Open shoulders, energize circulation
6️⃣ Golf swings – Activate rotation, loosen hips
7️⃣ Marching – Fire up your core and balance
8️⃣ Horse stance reps – Build strength and stability
9️⃣ Lunge & reach – Stretch hips, lengthen spine
🔟 Horse stance side stretch – Improve flexibility
✨ Tapping – Stimulate energy, reduce stress

🌿 Energy is everything. These movements are inspired by ancient Chinese practices—similar to the warm-ups we used in Karate. Long before modern science caught up, they understood the power of breath, flow, and energy.

I've added my own twist, adding hip opening movements, slow mobility waves and intentional breathing.

I love doing this in the mornings to start the day, or when I get to clinic - before I see my patients. It makes me feel alert, invigorated and calm.

It works really well as a pre-run warm up too, hitting all the major joints and and muscle groups.

💡 Just 15 minutes to feel lighter, stronger, and more grounded.

Give it a go!
