Another unsung hero of our area π
Shout to Susan's Farm CIO which is an organic, working care farm and registered charity located in Houghton and Susan Aglionby is their founder.
She has been farming in Cumbria for 33 years and built up her farm from a 19 acre small holding to over 200 acres. Her dynamism and energy has been an inspiration to many and in 2014 she was awarded an of the University of Cumbria and in 2017 an and the Blamire Medal for Contribution to Agriculture in Cumberland.
They were originally established as a community interest company, it transitioned into a registered CIO in May 2019 and the charity it's primary hub at The Croft in Houghton (Carlisle) and a second base at Wallacefield in Armathwaite.
The organization is driven by a vision to transform lives through purposeful outdoor activity, providing safe, structured farming activities for vulnerable adults with long-term mental health needs, learning difficulties, or physical disabilities.
Offering alternative educational provisions for teenagers struggling in mainstream education, alongside curriculum-based school visits to their farm and the nearby Aglionby Wetlands centre.
They manage around 150 acres of certified organic land. The farm rears traditional breeds, including Longhorn cattle, North of England Mule sheep and hens while practicing carbon-conscious grazing management.
