It’s Learning at Work Week this week and I’m seeing lots of posts about great opportunities for employees to learn new skills.
And it got me reflecting on how much learning actually comes from the spaces around the formal training.
Some of the most important things teams learn happen in conversations like these:
🌿A check-in before a meeting
🌿A moment of honesty
🌿Someone finally saying they’re struggling
🌿A quieter team member feeling able to contribute
🌿A manager realising they’ve been solving the wrong problem
🌿A conversation about values and what really matters to people at work
🌿A team discovering where their values align - and where they don’t.
That’s one of the things I’ve noticed most through the conversations people have using my “How Are You REALLY?” and “What Are Your VALUES?” Check-in cards.
The cards are just a tool, a way in to more meaningful self reflection and conversations - the true value is in what happens next...
🌿You learn what your team is carrying
🌿You learn what matters most to people
🌿You learn where people don’t feel safe speaking up
🌿You learn how differently people communicate and make decisions
🌿You learn what motivates different members of your team
🌿You learn that the person who seems “fine” often isn’t
🌿You learn that good questions can change the quality of a conversation very quickly.
For me, the ability to learn in a team has psychological safety at its foundation.
🌿People learn better when they can admit they don’t know something
🌿When they can ask for help without feeling judged
🌿When they can think out loud
🌿When they feel like a human first and an employee second.
What do you notice most impacts your ability to learn, contribute and grow at work?
