What is trauma?
Interestingly, people when asked about trauma, usually think of big traumatic experiences like fire, earthquakes, flood, abuse.
The word itself comes from Greek and means ‘a wound’. It this context, a psychological wound.
Trauma IS NOT what happened to you, trauma is what happened inside you as a result of traumatic experiences.
For some, it might be being left by a parent, for some it will be the death of a hamster. It can be trivial to the outside world but it is huge to the individual involved.
Depending on our circumstances (protective factors), we may or may not develop trauma after traumatic experiences. There is no comparison here. Two people going through a very similar traumatic experience, will act and deal with it differently. As a result of it, one might develop trauma, one might not. It is very individual.
Working with trauma is one of my interests. I acknowledge how traumatic experiences may affect our lives, leading to deep rooted psychological trauma.
I truly believe that integrative approach and always Bottom-up, is the best way forward. It takes time… it’s not an easy fix. The brain and the body need to re-learn.
