Marathon Taper Tips – Part 2

1. Get your gels sorted now
Don’t leave it until race week. The gels you’ve trained with can sell out, and race day is not the time to try something new on your stomach. Buy what you need now, plus a couple of spares.

2. Bring an old hoodie for the start line
You could be standing around in the cold for a while before the gun goes. Wear an old hoodie or jumper you don’t mind losing and take it off just before you start. Many races collect discarded clothing and give it to charity.

Small details, big difference. Get them sorted and you can focus on the run itself 💪

Marathon taper time? Here are 3 things I do in week one of my marathon taper 👇

1️⃣ Keep structure and routine
Run on the same days and at the same times you have been. Your body and mind are used to the rhythm, and keeping it helps you stay calm and confident going into race day.

2️⃣ Keep the intensity
Tapering doesn’t mean everything gets easy. Keep some short, sharp efforts at goal pace or a bit faster so your legs stay sharp and ready to go.

3️⃣ Lower the volume
This is where the taper happens. Cut back your total mileage and let your body absorb all the hard work you’ve done. The fitness is already there, so trust it.

A snap shot of my 12 week block on the Road to Irish Life Dublin Marathon .Delighted to make it to this point healthy. This only shows the overview but not the real story, the double days, early alarms, squeezing runs in around work, kids clubs and coaching. The unmotivated days where you drag yourself out, the wet and windy mornings when you would rather have that extra hours sleep. Current PB stands at 2:56:57. I’m currently feeling in the best shape I ever have at this point.
Looking forward to the taper/peaking phase now.
I won’t be getting carried away though. There’s a lot of work to be done yet. The marathon requires respect or it can humble even the best
