A fall isn’t just “part of getting older.” It could be the first sign that your bones need attention.

Did you know that osteoporosis is often called the “silent disease”? Most people don’t know they have it until a minor fall causes a fracture.

If you’re over 50, a simple trip or slip can sometimes lead to a broken wrist, hip or a spinal fracture.

The good news? Many falls and fractures are preventable.

Here are a few evidence-based ways to reduce your risk:
✅ Stay physically active with exercises that improve strength and balance.
✅ Include weight-bearing activities if they are appropriate for you.
✅ Make sure you’re getting enough calcium and vitamin D.
✅ Have your vision and medications reviewed regularly.
✅ If you’ve had a fall or fracture after the age of 50, speak to your GP about whether you should be assessed for osteoporosis.

Remember: Strong muscles help protect strong bones.

Prevention doesn’t start after a fracture—it starts today.

"Busy environments make me dizzy..."

If you've ever felt overwhelmed, dizzy, or unsteady in supermarkets, shopping centres, or crowded places, you're not alone.

This is often a sign of visual motion sensitivity — a common problem after a concussion, vestibular disorder, or inner ear injury.

Why does it happen?

🛒 Supermarkets are filled with moving people, busy shelves, bright lights, and complex visual patterns. Your brain must process all this information while also keeping you balanced.

👀 When the eyes, inner ear, and body send conflicting information, the brain struggles to make sense of it. This sensory mismatch can trigger dizziness, unsteadiness, nausea, and anxiety.

🚶‍♀️ Crowded environments can make symptoms even worse. The physical sensory overload often triggers a natural stress response, which amplifies dizziness and makes people want to avoid these situations altogether.

The good news?

✅ The brain can be retrained.

Evidence-based vestibular rehabilitation can help reduce symptoms through:
• Gaze stabilisation exercises (VOR x1 and VOR x2)
• Optokinetic training
• Progressive exposure and habituation exercises
• Balance and sensory integration training

Avoiding busy environments may feel safer in the short term, but gradual, structured exposure is often the key to long-term recovery.

If busy places make you dizzy, it doesn't necessarily mean your condition is worsening—it may simply mean your brain needs help learning to process visual motion more efficiently.

I have vertigo...

I hear this all the time.

Vertigo is not a diagnosis, it's describing the way you feel. It's like saying "I ache".

The important bit is what's causing it.

People with BPPV have vertigo and people with vestibular migraine have vertigo too.

However, the treatment approach is so different.
