🏫 BACK TO SCHOOL 📚

If your child has asthma and they’ve gone back to school this week, make sure they have their packed to take with them.
•
This includes:
A reliever/emergency inhaler - usually blue, but might also be white and red. Check that it’s full and is within its expiry date.
A spacer device (if they don’t use a breathe-actuated inhaler). Their spacer should be age-appropriate, and in good condition.
A personalized Asthma Action Plan - up to date and in colour- to help school staff to support your child with their asthma if they are unwell.

Bite sized training in the Paediatric Emergency 🚨Department today one of the many teaching sessions we are running for the month of September 💡

These sessions are well attended and we cover safe hospital 🏥discharges for asthma patients and recent changes to asthma treatment ✅
Today we also took the opportunity to put up some posters in the clinical areas for patients and their families.

These included information about the asthma ‘September Spike’ and QR codes for asthma 🫁management 😊

Children and young people up to age 25 with special educational needs are eligible for their annual flu vaccine from 1 September.

If your child has a health condition and you're not sure if they're eligible for the flu vaccine, speak to their GP or your local immunisation team.

September is always a busy month for the Asthma Team, because of the increase in hospital asthma admissions.

But this month, we are also running training sessions for staff working on the ward and in A&E.

This is to help equip staff with the skills for effective hospital discharges. This includes checking patients’ inhaler technique and medication, as well as providing asthma action plans.

We will also be teaching professionals about changes in asthma guidelines, promoting the use of MART regimes, which can help reduce overuse of salbutamol and adherence to essential preventer medication.

Sharing this poster with local GP’s, Practice Nurses and hospital teams today, to raise awareness of the upcoming campaign next month.

The NHS England campaign is in its 10th year and aims to raise awareness of the importance of managing asthma, with 4 simple ‘Asks’:

1. Getting an Asthma Action Plan
2. Booking an Asthma Review (annually or after ANY attack)
3. Knowing how to use inhalers
4. Considering air pollution and how this can affect lung health.

Our September Spike digital package is ready to be sent out to parents on Tuesday.
It contains information and advice on managing asthma during the viral season.
We have also spent the day sending out details of the Asthma September Spike to local GP’s, Practice Nurses, School Nurses and hospital staff.
Working together to support children and their families with asthma can help improve health outcomes!

If you haven’t already, it’s time to restart your/your child’s preventer inhaler in readiness for the return to school.
Asthma attacks are really common in September, so it’s important that they take their preventer to protect their airway and lungs during viral season.
Not taking an anti inflammatory treatment can lead to overuse of their blue rescue inhaler, loss of asthma control and serious asthma attacks.

Do thunderstorms ⚡️⛈️ trigger your asthma?

We've seen there’s a chance of thunder in parts of the UK.

We know that thunderstorms can sometimes trigger your asthma, causing asthma attacks and making symptoms like breathlessness, wheezing and coughing worse.

Although rare, you have a higher risk of getting thunderstorm asthma if you:

- have asthma and hay fever
- are not managing your asthma well
- have asthma but have not received a diagnosis yet.
