Autumn's Awesome adventures

Autumn's Awesome adventures Our daughter, Autumn, has Spina Bifida. In August 2023 we had fetalscopic surgery at 27 weeks gestation. She is now 2 and a half years old.

We are based in the South East of the U.K and are sharing our journey to help others.

What a bounce back!!

We slept at Granny and Grandads house last night as we had such an early start this morning.

We have been telling Autumn what would happen for the last couple of days. The mask would make her go to sleep, so they can take some pictures of her head and spine, and when she wakes up, we can have big hugs.

Autumn, for the first time, didn't fight the mask or get upset, we counted with the mask as we usually do her inhaler. We gave her a kiss and left her.

After an hour and 15 minutes, we were called into see her. Autumn had bearly opened her eyes at this point, very sleepy and drunk. We had lovely cuddles while she woke up. She ate and drank well. We then left 3 hours after we got there. A complete record. We've actually waited for longer in the waiting room before when they were running late.

It doesn't get any easier, but we are very proud of Autumn and so happy to be on our way home.
As always, thank you for keeping Autumn in your thoughts. 🩷

Tomorrow is another day, another MRI, to check Autumn's spinal cord and ventricles in her head. To ensure she doesn't have a blockage or hydrocephalus. We haven't had an MRI for a year. We are travelling up to London very early in the morning, thankfully. And Autumn will have another general anaesthetic, and if I'm totally honest, I've lost count of how many she's had, but off the top of my head, I think tomorrow will be her 7th or 8. More than most people have in a lifetime. Although the team are always amazing, there's still that fear and knowing your giving one of the most important people in your life to a team of people you don't know. Trust is important. Wish us luck. Fingers crossed there isn't a lot of waiting around for Autumn and that the results are ok- we won't find out for a week or 2, or until our next appointment.

This is the 'Welcome to Holland' poem, we first heard when I was pregnant, it helped us to realise that life would be different than we had thought and planned. But this is Holland and it is beautiful too, there is never a dull moment in our lives. We're still learning the our new language and we probably will be for a lifetime.

Thank you Jesy, for bravely sharing your story and helping to spread awareness.

Another trip to the Sealife Centre, only means one thing, another London appointment. Today's appointment was the second one this week.

Todays appointment went fairly well. Autumn marched in independently which is always good. Autumn checked all our hearts out with her consultants stethoscope and helped push the scanner in and out the room. She had fun. We discussed so much and Autumn's consultant is brilliant, she really cares and has time for her patients and families and most importantly, she answers all questions clearly and no question is silly.

Autumn was on the go ALL DAY. Now she doesn't have a dummy, she has decided she doesn't need a nap during the day, but she gets sooo tired and just doesn't stop. She walked the whole way around the Sealife Centre and had so much fun. The train on the way back was interesting with an independent, overtired toddler on a jam packed train. You could look round the train carriage and see some people smile as they see Autumn be very cute and others turn the volume up and close their eyes after a long day and not want to hear Autumn shout as she was told by myself and Andy to sit down on the seat for the 98th time.

Nevertheless, we arrived back to Granny and Grandads house and luckily, as usual we were fed and watered before returning before we return home.

We still have another 4 appointments for Autumn this month, including two in London, and one being under general anaesthetic.

For now, enjoy watching Autumn having fun in her favourite place.

Monday Autumn started her new room at nursery. She's managed really well, but when we picked her up, we were told that children don't use dummies in the new room.

We decided to bite the bullet and use that as an excuse to ditch the dummies for good.

When I fell pregnant, both me and Andy decided we wouldn't ever use dummies, but when Autumn was born, the NICU staff told us she was very unsettled and that a dummy may help. We immediately agreed. Since then, the dummies have been really helpful for calming and helping Autumn get through some difficult times, including hospital visits and of course, when she has bumped herself.

In all honestly, we tried before and couldn't ditch them, but we thought long and hard about how to explain to her about not needing them anymore. We also found some photos and showed her photos of babies with dummies like hers, so she can see they have been passed on.

Autumn has now had 2 nights of dummy free nights without any fuss and we are very proud of her about the grown up girl she is becoming.
