The trouble is, many of us were never taught just how closely what we eat is connected to our health, and more importantly, to how we feel day-in day-out.

If you’re struggling with low energy, high cholesterol, digestive problems, changes approaching menopause, or simply want to stay healthy and independent as you age, food can be such a powerful part of the picture.

Look out for my upcoming posts – I’ll be looking at the science in plain English and, most importantly, sharing some everyday food choices that can make a real difference.

Watch this space... we’ve only just got started.

A few more letters after my name… MBANT 🎓

After six years of study, I’m happy to be officially registered as a BANT Registered Nutritionist® and a full member of the British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine.

Why does that matter? The title “nutritionist” can be used by people with very different levels of training. BANT registration provides reassurance that I have completed recognised degree-level education (BSc Hons) and am committed to professional standards, ethical practice and ongoing learning.

A proud milestone for me — and an important foundation for the Dartmouth Nutrition Studio.

Yes, i am indeed posting my lunch again! Today’s “recipe” is helping me towards a personal goal of improving my cholesterol levels - with plenty of fibre from lentils, orange, buckwheat, edamame, roasted pumpkin seeds, red chicory and rocket, including soluble fibre from the lentils and orange.

I love adding orange to salads, especially with bitter leaves. I learnt to segment oranges properly on one of the many cookery courses I’ve attended over the years, so it now takes less than a minute — and the juice released as I go makes a lovely dressing with extra virgin olive oil. Top skill!

Today I added a little Ortiz tuna for high-quality protein. I’d never been a huge tuna fan, but discovered these tiny tins are delicious. They’re also a bit spendy, so I keep a pack of three and use them just occasionally when I really fancy one.

But most importantly, this is never about eating what I “should”. I don’t do “shoulds” ... I just love making delicious meals I genuinely look forward to, and get excited about eating - that happen to support my health goals too.

Welcome to Dartmouth Nutrition Studio.

I’m Sue Matthew, a Registered Nutritional Therapy Practitioner based in Dartmouth.

After many years in corporate life, I returned to study nutrition and completed a First Class BSc (Hons) in Nutritional Therapy. I’m especially interested in how everyday choices around food, sleep, movement and stress shape our health, energy and quality of life.

Dartmouth Nutrition Studio is for locals and visitors who want practical, realistic support to eat well — without rigid rules, complicated plans or nutrition perfection.

I’ll be offering a growing mix of:

• one-to-one nutrition support
• local workshops and small-group sessions
• practical food and shopping experiences
• ideas for eating well while living in, or visiting, Dartmouth
• health, energy and holiday-reset experiences

My approach is evidence-based, but firmly grounded in real life: food should support health, but it should also be enjoyable, sociable and manageable.

Alongside the Studio, I also support busy professionals and organisations through my work on The Physiology of Leadership Performance — exploring how nutrition, sleep, movement and recovery influence energy, thinking and performance under pressure.

This page will be where I share local events, practical nutrition ideas and new ways to work with me as the Studio develops.

Many people notice their energy dipping mid-afternoon and assume it’s just part of the day.

At this week’s Dartmouth Leisure Centre workshop we explored how blood sugar regulation, caffeine and sleep can influence how stable energy feels through the day. There were great questions and lots of discussion.

The “props” in the photo came out when we started talking about quick, practical lunches. One simple way to support more stable energy is to combine carbohydrates with protein and fibre.

For example:
lentils + grains + vegetables or salad + a tin of fish.

Three minutes later you have a balanced lunch that is far more likely to keep energy and appetite steady for the afternoon.

These sessions are always shaped by the questions people bring, which makes them a pleasure to run.

Next workshop coming up on April 28th at Dartmouth Leisure Centre

25/03/2026

The next in my series of workshops at the Dartmouth Leisure Centre coming up Tuesday 31st at 1.30pm.
