Ever noticed that nobody stands in front of the fridge at 10pm desperately craving chicken breast or veg?
But crisps? Chocolate? Biscuits? Thatโs a different story.
๐ฌ In the video, Aidan explains why.
The reason lies in the difference between homeostatic hunger and hedonic hunger.
๐ Homeostatic hunger is your bodyโs need for fuel and nutrients.
๐ Hedonic hunger is your brainโs desire for reward, pleasure and enjoyment.
When youโre genuinely hungry, foods like chicken, eggs or potatoes sound appealing because your body needs energy.
But when youโve just eaten dinner and suddenly fancy crisps or chocolate, thatโs often your brainโs reward system talking.
Highly processed foods are designed to be rewarding, combining salt, fat, carbohydrates and texture in a way that keeps us reaching for more.
One of the most interesting things many patients tell us after starting weight loss medications is that the โpullโ of these foods often becomes quieter.
๐ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ:
If youโre craving food because your body needs energy, thatโs biological hunger. If youโre specifically craving crisps, chocolate or biscuits despite being full, thatโs usually reward hunger. Blood sugar and hormones can start the process, but the reason you want a particular food often comes from the brainโs reward system.
