🙏 Novena of Prayer 🙏
Day 2: Genesis
Today, we continue our annual Novena of Prayer to our patron, St Columba, abbot and evangelical missionary who continues to guide all the works of The Columba Community. As we journey together in prayer over these nine days may we be inspired by the lives of St Columba and all the Celtic Saints of The Golden Age who remind us of the importance of the building up of Basic Christian Communities in creating His Kingdom here on earth.
Colmcille the Scribe
Columba had a great reverence for Scripture both reading and writing it. He was certainly the main scribe in the completion of the Cathach a major work now preserved in the Library of the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin. Colmcille (Columba) played a major role in the development of the monastic system in Ireland in the 6th to the 12th centuries (the Golden Age) founding monastaries in Derry, Durrow and Kells with an emphasis on scripture, love of nature, contemplation and muintearas (community, friendship and relationships) During his stay on Iona one third of the monks’ day was spent in the scriptorium studying and copying sacred writings. Three of our surviving illuminated books, Durrow, Lindisfarne and Kells all have Columban connections. After Columba’s death the community on Iona treated his books as relics by carrying them round with them in times of drought or when praying for safety during hazardous sea journeys.
Prayer
Father we thank you for the life of Columba and his great example to us of using his knowledge of reading and writing to spread your Word throughout the world. Tommy Mc Cay
