It’s almost dinner time and you don’t know what to cook. Again.

If your neurodivergent child sticks to the same five foods, you’re not doing anything wrong. For many ADHD or autistic children, a new food can feel overwhelming, the texture, the smell, the not knowing. So we don’t push. We build a bridge.

Sweet potato is one of the gentlest. Naturally sweet, soft, and cut into the same safe shape every time. The seed dip sits on the side, so your child stays in control.

Sweet potato bites with seed dip · Serves 4 · Paleo style and vegan · Ready in 35 minutes

What helps a neurodivergent child feel safe enough to settle?

For some children, it might be time outdoors, the company of an animal or a quieter environment away from the demands of everyday life. For others, it may look completely different.

This is why functional medicine looks beyond food and supplements. Stress management, sleep, sensory demands and a child’s environment all deserve attention when we’re trying to understand the whole picture.

Through my work with craniosacral therapy and horses, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of gentleness, presence and allowing each individual to respond in their own way.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach. We need to understand the child in front of us.

In week three of my four-week live online course for parents of neurodivergent children, we’ll explore stress management and practical ways to support your child’s regulation in everyday life.

The course starts on 4 November.

3 ways I support your child’s nervous system

When a neurodivergent child’s nervous system is stuck in fight, flight or freeze, everyday life can feel like too much, for them and for you. These are three of the ways I help children settle back into a calmer, rest and restore state.

➡️Craniosacral therapy. A gentle, low-demand therapy, hands-on or hands-off, that gives the nervous system space to settle.

➡️Time in nature. A little time outdoors every day, with fresh air, room to run and a break from screens, gives an overwhelmed nervous system a chance to rest. It’s Sunday afternoon, so this one you can do today. Pull on your boots, leave the screens at home and head outside together, even if it’s only for half an hour.

➡️Horses. In some craniosacral sessions I bring horses into the space, because they can add a sense of calm and ease that helps a child settle more deeply.

Helping an overwhelmed nervous system find calm is Week 3 of my four-week parenting course, where you’ll leave with a toolkit of simple calming and sleep practices to use as a family.

Warm apple and chia pots for after school

After a full day of masking, sensory overload and following instructions, many neurodivergent children come home running on empty. Often they’ve barely eaten, and hunger and overwhelm can look exactly the same.

That’s why I suggest offering food early and quietly, before anyone asks about their day.

These warm apple and chia pots pair the gentle sweetness of apple with protein from yoghurt, which may help energy feel steadier. For sensitive eaters, blend or grate the apple and keep the yoghurt separate.

But a snack is only one piece of the picture.

In my four-week live online course, The Functional Medicine Approach to Neurodivergence, I’ll show you how your child’s gut, food, sleep and nervous system can shape their mood, focus and calm, and what you can realistically change at home.

You’ll leave with:

✓ Your child’s functional medicine map
✓ Simple ways to support gut health and nutrition
✓ A calming and sleep toolkit for the whole family
✓ One achievable family plan
✓ My full recipe ebook

A four-week course for parents of neurodivergent children

Brain health sits underneath how your child focuses, makes decisions and manages their emotions. Functional medicine looks at the biology underneath all of that.

This course isn’t about changing your child. It’s about supporting their biology, so they can become more resilient, cope better with everyday life, and so everyday life at home can feel better for all of you.

Each week brings practical information and simple steps you can start using at home straight away.

The course is also open to adults who want life at work and at home to feel more manageable.

Send me a DM with the word COURSE and I’ll share the details.

When your child is struggling, you want to know what will help

If you are raising a neurodivergent child, you already know how much of your day goes into helping them cope. The meltdowns, the tantrums, the food sensitivities, the hard transitions from one thing to the next. You are doing everything you can, and you are tired.

Functional medicine looks at your child’s biology, rather than focusing only on their behaviour. We look at food, sleep, digestion, gut health and the nervous system, and at the different ways we can support your child to be more resilient, with better wellbeing and a greater ability to cope.

Functional medicine doesn’t change who your child is. It supports them to be the best version of themselves.

I’m sharing all of this in a four-week live online course for parents of neurodivergent children, and for adults who want life at work and at home to feel more manageable.

Send me a DM with the word COURSE and I’ll share the details.

Each week covers one area of your child’s health: understanding your child, gut and food, calming the nervous system and sleep, and creating a home where your child can thrive. You leave every session with simple steps you can start at home.

It is not about changing who your child is. It is about understanding what they need, so they have the best possible chance to thrive.

How being in the presence of horses helps your nervous system find calm

We have been talking a lot about calm lately: calm mornings, calming tools, and the biology behind a settled nervous system. This is another piece of that picture, and one that is very close to my heart.

In my craniosacral work I bring people and horses together, and I’ve watched how often the body settles more deeply when a horse is part of the session. Swipe through for the reasons I think it helps.

Every session is built around choice and consent, for you and for the horse, and everyone responds differently.

If you ride or own horses in East Sussex, West Sussex, Surrey or Kent and would like to try a session, comment DISCOVERY below.

Why I bring horses into my craniosacral work

As a functional medicine practitioner and craniosacral therapist, I work closely with the nervous system, and my craniosacral practice includes both people and horses. When a client settles into the cranial rhythm, the horse often chooses to come and join the session. It may rest near the head, move along the body, or reach right over, and time and again I find it drawing my attention to something the client hasn’t yet noticed.

Clients come to me for all kinds of reasons, from migraines to musculoskeletal pain, and every session is shaped around what you would like to focus on. The horse is always free to come close or keep its distance, and so are you.

If you ride or own horses in East Sussex, West Sussex, Surrey or Kent and would love to try a session together, comment DISCOVERY below and I’ll be in touch.

How functional medicine supports neurodivergence.

Brain health shapes how we focus, how we make decisions, how we regulate emotions and how we respond to pressure. It also shapes how we recover, how we connect with other people and how we cope with stress. For a child, that might be the morning when everything feels harder than it should, because the routine changed or the uniform feels wrong.

Testing helps us see the picture clearly. Gut and microbiome results show how digestion may be influencing the brain. DNA stays the same whether you are five or a hundred and five, so it can guide support for life. Nutrient and toxicity tests show where the body is right now.

Together, they give us a personalised starting point, so we can support your child, or you, to thrive at home, at school and everywhere in between.

If you want to understand what is driving your child’s behaviour, join me for my 4 week live online course.
