Physical activity is for everyone

The last of our series in the UK Chief Medical Officers' physical activity guidelines highlight that disabled children, young people, and adults can all benefit from being active in ways that work for them.

Being active can help:
🙂 Improve mental wellbeing
💪 Strengthen muscles and bones
🚶Improve mobility, balance and fitness
🤝Create opportunities to meet new people and feel part of the community
🏘️Make everyday tasks easier and support independence

The guide encourages
Disabled children and young people
⏱️Aim for 20 minutes of physical activity each day, building up gradually
💪Include strength and balance activities 3 times a week where possible

Disabled adults
⏱️Aim or at least 150 minutes moderate activity each week (or a combination of moderate and vigorous if appropriate)
💪Include strength and balance activities on at least two days a week

Most importantly
✨Even a little movement is better than nothing
✨Don't be still for too long
✨Find activities you enjoy and make them part of your daily life

Whether it's wheeling, swimming, dancing, taking part in community activities, every movement counts and can help improve, confidence and quality of life.

Physical Activity in Older Age
Did you know that strength and balance naturally declines as we get older?

The good news is that the UK Chief Medical Officers' guidance shows that regular strength and balance activities can slow this decline, helping you stay stronger, steadier and independent for longer.

The graph in the image below shows the difference:
📉 Without regular strength and balance exercise, our physical ability declines more quickly.
📈 With regular strength and balance activities, we stay above the level needed for an active, independent life for much longer.

That's why older adults are encouraged to:
🚶 Be active everyday - remember, some movement is always better than none
💪 Do activities to improve strength, balance and flexibility at least twice a week.
♥️ Aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity each week (or 75 minutes of vigorous activity if you're already active)
🪑 Break up long periods of sitting by standing or moving around regularly

Being active isn't just about living longer - it's about living well, staying confident, reducing your risk of falls, maintaining your independence and continuing to do things you love.

It's never too early - and it's never too late - to build strength and improve balance.
