β something witchy this way comes... β
growing up, I never understood why witches were always given a bad rep
in films & books, they were usually the characters that I was most intrigued by, the ones I wanted to know more about
I was rarely interested in the princesses with the pretty dresses who had to wait for some prince or other to show up & rescue them
πΏ
I wanted to know more about the women who were independent & opinionated, who always seemed to live in a secluded cottage in the forest or a castle on a clifftop
the women who lived life on their own terms, who seemed to do whatever they wanted & generally ignored all societal expectations
if, as was usually the case, they were the bad guy of the narrative, I wanted to know why?
I wanted to know THEIR stories...

I understood from quite a young age that the witches depicted in the tales of my childhood reflected something bigger, and were part of a far older tradition
and I sensed that they were already, and were always going to be, connected to my own story...
