This weekend we’ve been renewing the Skybarn Yurt, our spacious 30 x 60ft event space, with spectacular skylight, ready for weddings in September with . We have a forge in the workshop now and that lets us heat our dragon sticks to a glowing orange colour, to burn the round holes in the crown of the yurt into square holes, which prevents the roof poles from twisting. Like a caveman tenon and mortice!

Green Ash carefully selected and loaded up. After milling into sticks, we plane them and shape by hand into smooth poles. They then go into the steam box and once nice and hot we stick them in the jig and bend the ends into shape. Steamy work! We love it!

Now the & pack-down is finally done, and we took a bit of slow time, morris danced, drank wine, chilled with our people back home, Ben gets to play with all the toys in the workshop again.

Planing mega long roof poles for a 30ft yurt.
We use the straightest grained Ash we can find. All sourced from as locally as possible from sustainably managed woodland near Glastonbury.

We make Gers and Kyrgyz style steam-bent Yurts.

The first few photos show the Ger. You can’t fault how lovely it’s looking in the buttercups.

A Ger is a wooden-framed dwelling with straight poles.
Our straight-pole Gers don’t involve any steam-bending so the overall crafting and processing time is far less.

You’ll see in the 2nd photo the difference in the straight poles to the arched frames of a steam-bent yurt.

We take just as much care in our work but there are differences in the overall Ger structure compared to our Kyrgyz style steam-bent Yurt.  

The bent frame in our steamed Yurts are much stronger due to the Krygyz style curve in the roof and have a more useable space all around the circumference and right up to the trellis walls. And aren’t they a beautiful structure, visually? (Last 3 photos)

We do love our Kyrgyz style steamed yurts for the reasons stated above and also because we think the craftsmanship and attention to detail is far more beautiful than the more basic design of the Ger.

Although we don’t think it’s as gert lush as the Kyrgyz style yurt; don’t knock the Ger. It has its place. And as an adaptable space, it’s pretty ace!
