Skin nerd time 🤓
On a deep dive for a client connecting the dots between their fatigue and rosacea I stumbled across this fascinating paper
Skin Barrier Function: The Interplay of Physical, Chemical, and Immunologic Properties. Baker et al., 2023
Mitochondria are our little power houses producing energy (ATP) in cells. They play a huge role in our physical health and can of course play a role in our skin health too. This graphic and paper specifically describes the role they play in balancing our acid mantle and ceramide production and supporting skin barrier health.
The health of our Mitochondria can be supported by certain diet and lifestyle behaviours. things like viruses and inflammation can impede mitochondrial function and result in symptoms such as fatigue, illness, low mood….
When a client is presenting with fatigue and rosacea I am immediately alert to what might be affecting their mitochondria function 🕵️♀️
- diet?
- lack of exercise?
- lack of sleep?
- infection?
- heavy metals?
- medication?
- alcohol / drugs?
This clients programme is already working to support their mitochondria and we are seeing improvements in her energy and skin so hopefully it’s just diet and lifestyle related. If not I’d consider specific testing to assess for other factors affect her mitochondrial health and contributing to her fatigue and rosacea.
Do you ever think about your mitochondria? I hope this time has inspired you to do so 🤩
