Clinic Story | 30 Years of Migraines—Relief in 50 Minutes
That morning, a patient came in for what was supposed to be a routine follow-up.
But the moment she walked through the door, I knew something was wrong.
Her brows were tightly furrowed, her eyes almost completely shut, and she was being supported by a family member.
“Doctor… my migraine is back…” she said, her voice weak and trembling.
She had been caught in the middle of an acute migraine attack.
This patient has suffered from migraines for over 30 years. In the past decade, they’ve become increasingly severe. She describes the pain as “head-splitting,” to the point where she once felt like banging her head against a wall. She can’t open her eyes—any light is unbearable—and the attacks come with intense nausea and vomiting.
She has tried nearly every over-the-counter headache medication available. When the pain is mild, they sometimes help. But during severe attacks, they’re as useless as candy.
In the past, she had no choice but to go to A&E—waiting up to 8 hours each time, enduring unbearable pain.
Since starting treatment with me, she hadn’t had a severe attack—until this one.
The week before, she had been under intense work pressure: late nights, irregular meals, no exercise. She had a 2 PM deadline that day but simply couldn’t push through.
I checked her pulse—it was significantly weaker than usual on both sides.
This was a classic case of a stress-triggered acute migraine.
Instead of prescribing herbal medication, I went straight to acupuncture.
After a few needles, her breathing began to slow and deepen. The shallow, rapid breaths gradually settled. Her whole body started to relax.
As the treatment continued, I heard gentle gurgling from her abdomen—a positive sign. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this indicates that the body’s energy flow is beginning to rebalance and stagnation is clearing.
After 50 minutes, I gently woke her.
She said,
“It’s amazing. The nausea is gone, and I feel calm again. When I came in, I felt like I was about to break down any second. My head still hurts a little, but… I feel alive again.”
The next day, she messaged me: after the session, she managed to finish her work and send it to her client before the deadline—something she said would have been impossible otherwise.
Migraines aren’t easy to cure completely.
But those 50 minutes showed her something important:
Not every attack has to end in collapse.
📌 If you or someone you know struggles with chronic migraines, stress headaches, or persistent pain, don’t just rely on painkillers to get through it. Acupuncture may be worth exploring.
