The process of therapy can be a painful, grief laden one. A lot of time can be spent on the awfulness of whatever experience or trauma brought you there in the first place.
The therapy room can be the first place that those experiences are seen, heard and validated, spending time with the pain of it all makes a lot of sense and is an important part of the process.
A defining principal within body psychotherapy is that regardless of the trauma that is experienced our essential self remains unharmed and untouched, we are not broken. We can be wounded, hurt, suffering or traumatised but we are not broken.
Through the process of a supportive, relational, emotionally present and grounded therapist it is possible to begin the work to rediscover who and what our essential self is. What brings us pleasure and joy and how can we access it?
This can be long and complicated work. Trauma survivors find it hard to allow themselves pleasure and joy, as the after effects of trauma can be all consuming and debilitating.
The work of the therapist is to reflect back that as humans we are built for pleasure and joy and these experiences are not out of reach, regardless of what happened to us.
