Why do you do it? Is a question I am often asked about running the death cafe. I have found myself repeatedly supporting the dying and their relatives throughout my life personally and in my role as a nurse. It seems to me now this was not by chance. In being with people at this dark time I provide an ear and a perspective. It also gave me gratitude on my own life and for my family and our health.
However talking about death also reminds us how it is part of the circle of life and often at the café there has been laughter as we remember those who were in our lives with joy.
I found this article very interesting and hope you do too.

Once, I spent a year walking Brooklyn’s historic Green-Wood Cemetery daily, winding between the marble tombs engulfed by tree-roots and emblazoned with the surnames of the dead, each followed…

✨ Death is the one thing we all have in common, yet it's often the hardest topic to discuss. ✨

Whether we're healthy and ignoring the inevitable, or facing a loved one's illness and fearing the conversation, silence is a common choice. But this silence comes at a cost.

When we avoid talking about death due to fear or cultural taboos, we miss out on something vital: the chance to share our true wishes and hopes with the people we love. By staying silent, we unknowingly give up our autonomy and the power to make our own decisions.

You deserve better than silence. 💛

Join us to break the taboo, share stories, and reclaim your voice in a safe, supportive space. No agenda, just conversation.

Fancy joining a book club...about death?

The Death Book Club's next book is Memorial Days by Geraldine Brooks.

Blurb from Penguin Random House: "Many cultural and religious traditions expect those who are grieving to step away from the world. In contemporary life, we are more often met with red tape and to-do lists. This is exactly what happened to Geraldine Brooks when her partner of more than three decades, Tony Horwitz – just sixty years old – collapsed and died."

Discussion of this memoir will be on the 16th of August at 7pm via Google Meet. Meeting runs for about an hour.

Email Erin ([email protected]) for more information and to sign up.

Live well and die well.

Something we've chatted about at previous meetings. If you're interested in this and more pop along one day.

Does consciousness continue after death?
That's the age old question, and one that we explore in our first film, In the Realm of Death & Dreaming.

Those who have had these experiences are sometimes reluctant to talk about it due to a fear of being misunderstood, dismissed , or thought of as mentally unsound.

But we want to hear about it!
If you've had an NDE, tell us about it.
What was it like? What did you see? How did it change you?
