International Alopecia Awareness Day
Today is International Alopecia Awareness Day, an opportunity to recognise that hair loss is far more than a cosmetic concern.
Every week at Trichology Scotland, I meet people whose confidence has quietly been affected by changes to their hair. Some have noticed a widening parting, others unexpected patches of hair loss, excessive shedding or gradual thinning over many years. Behind every consultation is a unique story, and no two journeys are ever the same.
Alopecia simply means hair loss, but it isn’t one single condition. It includes many different causes, from alopecia areata, female and male pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, traction alopecia and more. Each requires careful assessment because successful treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis.
One of the most important messages I want to share today is this:
Hair loss should never be dismissed as “just cosmetic.”
For many people, it affects confidence, relationships, work, social life and emotional wellbeing. The impact is often invisible to everyone else.
The encouraging news is that we now understand far more about hair and scalp health than ever before. With the right clinical assessment, evidence led investigations and personalised treatment, many forms of alopecia can be effectively managed, and in many cases, significantly improved.
Today is about raising awareness, reducing stigma and reminding anyone experiencing hair loss that you don’t have to navigate it alone.
If you’ve noticed changes in your hair or scalp, seek advice early. Understanding why your hair has changed is the first step towards finding the right solution.
Every hair loss story deserves understanding.
