Yarrow, as far as the eye can see!!
From 1 plant I now have HUGE clumps of this beauty everywhere in my veg garden & springing up in the rest of the garden!

Yarrow is well selected by dogs in various formats - fresh or dried, infusion, essential oil, hydrosol or flower essence.

Due to it's anti microbial & anti inflammatory properties yarrow is probably best known as a wound healer.

Dogs may also find support for hind gut imbalance, musculoskeletal inflammation & for the emotional heart when selecting yarrow during a Herbal Choices session.

The flower essence is said to aid maintenance of healthy boundaries.

I don't know if the pink flowering variety has the same properties as common yarrow, but they do make a lovely bouquet of summer blooms! 🩵💚🖤🪷🌿

My sensory herb garden I created a few months ago. Things are starting to happen now the plants are establishing themselves & creating their own little community!

Sensory gardens are a great way of supporting anxious dogs - they can become a haven of calm where the dog can freely self-select to support whole body balance.

A sensory garden can be created in as small or large a space as you have & to suit your budget, time & level of gardening knowledge. Even just a few pots of aromatic herbs is better than nothing!

Elements you can include:
Aromatic plants (eg lavender, lemon balm, mints, rosemary etc) for inhalation
Plants that can be safely nibbled on to support healthy digestion such as yarrow or barley grass
Different types of ground cover, such as bark, grass, pebbles etc to support proprioception by differing sensations through the paw pads
Adding wide rocks or bits of wood they can step to reach a pklant can add some physio to a sensory garden mooch.
If you're feeling especially creative, a water feature could add some aural magic to the mix!

In my sensory garden I have valerian, motherwort, yarrow, oxeye daisy, calendula, rosemary, oregano, rose geranium, milk thistle, chamomile, thyme, lavender & several plantain plants that have popped up by themselves.
More info on these plants individually & what they can offer our anxious dogs in the weeks to come.

But for now, happy planting!🌿🐾💚💙🖤

Despite offering a variety of services to help anxious dogs, my 1st love will always be The Bowen Technique.

To me it is the most delicious of kind & gentle hands-on bodywork approaches which elicits some of the most profound changes I have seen in my canine clients.

There is no mystery in the workings of this technique – the unique hands-on application (gentle rolling moves over soft tissue made with fingers or thumbs) stimulate the nervous system & reach the insular cortex- a part of the brain linked to maintaining body balance (homeostasis), emotional balance & healthy self-awareness (interoception).

When a nervous system is dysregulated sensory information from the body may be misinterpreted, leading to physical pain or tension, heightened emotions & anxiety, mind-body disconnect & hyper-vigilance.

When the insular cortex is stimulated the nervous system has the chance to reset & feel safe once more, from which point the rest can follow, allowing for reduced pain & tension, emotional balance, mind & body reconnection & downgraded stress responses.

This is why The Bowen Technique will always be my go-to service for anxious dogs suffering from physical pain.🐾💚💙🖤

Nearly Spring guys!
It may still be a bit cold & gloomy but rest assured that things are happening beneath the soil - plants are stirring from their slumber getting ready to show themselves above ground!

This makes me think of the little helpers we don't see - the roots & rhizomes that can help us support our anxious dogs through natural self-selection.

Today I pay homage to 2 humble plants that have a wealth of health support within their roots - dandelion & burdock.

Both have an affinity with the liver, blood sugar regulation & insulin production, amongst a whole host of other benefits.

What does this have to do with our anxious dogs? When faced with a threat the body's fight/flight/freeze mechanism triggers a cascade of biological processes to cope with the event & increase chances of survival.

The liver plays an important part in the before & after of any stressful event - releasing glucose into the blood stream ready for action, then filtering out cortisol once the event is over.

Prolonged/repeated exposure to stress triggers creates an extra burden on the liver & contributes to elevated blood sugar levels, while reducing the effectiveness of insulin. Over time this can lead to physiological imbalances & major health issues.

I find that both dandelion & burdock root are very well selected by dogs when correctly offered as part of a Herbal Choices session.

Why do I do what I do?

I was never one of those kids who had a strong idea of what I wanted to be - in fact while in school I don't think I ever thought that far ahead!

My mum often suggested "physiotherapist" as a career path for me - I didn't even know what that was!

But now here I am, having taken a less traditional pathway to working with the body to help resolve issues similar to those I would have been resolving had I followed my mum's advice.🤔

Having done a string of very different, unfulfilling roles I have found my Ikigai - that which fills me with joy & makes me feel at home🤗

These are the reasons I love my job:
🔥Passion - for helping others find peace in their own bodies again

👣Variety - perfect for a busy brain that easily gets bored! My job means I get to work with a variety of different animals & people using a variety of therapeutic tools

🖌Creativity - no 2 dogs are the same, even if they have the same symptoms. Each session is creatively crafted to suit the body & nervous system in the room for optimal outcomes

👐Hands that listen - I love working with my hands- but a bodyworkers' skills are not just about knowing the technique & applying it to the anatomy – we have highly sensitive hands that are able to feel & “listen” to what the tissues are saying. This is one of the most exciting parts of my job!

🧐Knowledge & learning - you never stop learning about the body! My therapeutic journey has lead me down educational paths & opened new avenues I never had considered before

❓Problem solving - I love a challenge (within reason!) & running a small business in a competitive industry certainly keeps me on my toes!

Have you found your Ikigai?💚🩵🖤
