This week our practice theme was ‘Focus’ and we ended with my latest poem - Inner Focus:

Allow yourself a moment
Breathe deeply, calm your mind
Channel your inner focus
To rest your thoughts awhile

Embrace the power you own
Permit your gaze to centre
No views or judgement now
Just feel your prana flow

You have this power to aid you
Wheresoever you may be
To call on anytime you need
To let yourself just be

In this evening’s practice we focussed on ‘Transition’ tuning in to the movement between poses and relating that to enjoying every step of our lives rather than being channelled on the next big thing, a goal etc. This is my poem to try to encapsulate all that.

As we move from pose to pose
As we travel through the steps of life
Where is our focus? What is our goal?
To reach the destination or to journey with a smile?

Each pose may seem to be a goal
To reach, to strive for, to achieve
Or maybe - enjoy each step along the way
And find a transition both mindful and profound

And so, go gently through your life
Hugging each journey close
Embracing the ride life takes you on
And consciously live each step of your life’s path

My poem for Beltane, representing the transition between Spring and Summer. Maybe an opportunity to tune in with the natural world, to be quiet and listen to the rhythm of nature; connecting with something beyond ourselves - whatever that means for you.

Seasons change, quietly, imperceptively
The natural order carries on,
Ignorant of our hopes and dreams

Spring brings renewal, growth
Shoots of fresh green
Careless of our worries or woes

Summer bursts with abundance
Warmth, heady scents and vibrant life
Heedless of our wants or needs

And yet, just now, half-way between
A call, a moment to truly connect
Offers itself, if we can hear

Maybe allow ourselves to bond
Open our hearts, forego our egos
And permit nature to guide us on

Last week was all about Equilibrium, a beautiful practice to a full class. Ending with my latest composition:

Rooting down into the earth
Grounding strength to rise
Reaching up to the sun
Growing tall and proud

Engaging the body
to release the mind
Observing not judging
Balance is found

Tuning body, mind and spirit
As you flow
Stability in motion
Your practice and your life grow

Last week we focussed on heart-opening during our practice, concluding with this, my latest, poem.

Breathe in – your chest opens
Breathe out – you release
Inhale – joy
Exhale – negativity

As the sun dips down
You can close, let go, release
You can feel lighter, freer
At one with yourself

As the sun rises
you can open, behold, embrace
You can feel radiant, unafraid
to welcome joy within

Your heart is an open space
Every beat can bring release
You call the tune for your heart to play
You can rest, you may.

When I first started teaching I found that I liked to close each practice with a poem or reading. Lately I've found it harder and harder to find a one which really suits each practice. So I have begun to compose my own! Scary but I'm really enjoying this added creative element to my teaching.

Here is my effort for last week's practice focused on Sukha and Sthira:

STHIRA, YOUR STEADINESS, YOUR STRENGTH
STANDING FIRM AGAINST THE WINDS THAT BLOW YOUR WAY
EMPOWERING YOU TO STAND FAST
ALLOWING YOU TO BE, JUST BE

SUKHA, YOUR EASE, YOUR COMFORT
FLEXING WITH LIFE’S CHANGES AS THEY COME YOUR WAY
BREATHING TO SOFTEN AND BEND
EMPOWERING YOU TO GROW

SOFTENING WITH YOUR BREATH
GROUNDING DOWN FOR STRENGTH
IN YOUR STEADINESS, FINDING RESILIENCE
IN YOUR SOFTNESS, FINDING JOY
