On this day in 1866 the Royal Surrey County Hospital was officially opened.

Discussions of a general hospital which would serve the whole county of Surrey, were first had in January 1862. The land on which the original hospital stood, was donated by Lord Onslow after an ambitious appeal to begin building the hospital.

Queen Victoria became a patron of the hospital, donating 100 Guineas (£100) to the cost of construction, and then gave her permission for the title ‘Royal’ to be added in memory of her late husband, Prince Albert.

The hospital was located on Farnham Road for 113 years before it was closed. The ‘new’ Royal Surrey County Hospital, on Egerton Road, was opened on 16 October 1978 by Queen Elizabeth II.
